In the control of a material-processing process in a regulated system, a preliminary adjustment of the system takes place at the beginning of each process cycle as a function of a precalculated process parameter. A material characteristic which is relevant for the process and which in turn is dependent on state variables (such as the composition of the material and its temperature), is included in an advance calculation of the process parameter. The relationship between the state variables and the material property is modelled in a neural network which forms a prediction value for the material property on its output side. As a function of the deviation between the prediction value and an actual value for the material property which is determined based on measuring the process parameter during the process cycle, an adaptive change of the network parameters takes place in the sense of reducing this deviation.

A feedback control of a hot and/or cold rolling process by means of a process control system, which executes a predetermined rolling program containing the initial and final dimensions, material data, roll temperatures, etc., and has a master system for controlling the setpoint values of subordinate, preferably decoupled, individual control units for the variable functional variables of the individual roll stands, e.g. rolling force, rotational speed, screw-down position [setting], etc. The setpoint values of the control units are determined in a computational operation using model equations, in which prepared and statistically processed measured values of the process variables are substituted, with convergent adaptation of absolute parameters to the actual parameters. In the event of changes in the requirements of the rolling process, in particular in the event of a transition from manual to automatic operation, or of changes in the final thickness, and/or changes in temperature, a relative adaptation of the parameters is carried out on the basis of the set values used before the changes in requirements as initial values.

The invention relates to control in the manufacture of hot strip by means of a multi-stand hot-strip rolling mill, especially a wide-strip rolling mill, which has a higher-order process control system with a sampling plan with the initial and final dimensions, with material data, rolling temperatures, etc., and a guidance system for setpoint control of lower-order decoupled individual regulators for the variable functional parameters of the individual roll stands, e.g. roll adjustment, rotational speed, torque, etc., with the setpoints of the individual regulators being determined by means of a computation process using model equations with convergent parameter adjustment to the actual parameters, in such fashion that a working point control that can be determined in advance is provided and section control and regulation are accomplished by changing the load distribution on the individual stands in such fashion that the working points lie in the previously determined tolerance range of a shape control line.
