Abstract: A system for localization of a safe landing zone comprises at least one image-capture device onboard an aerial vehicle, and an onboard processor coupled to the image-capture device. The processor is operative to execute instructions to perform a method that comprises: receive, from the image-capture device, two or more overlapping images of a landscape underneath the aerial vehicle; generate, based on the overlapping images, a landing zone heatmap of the landscape; identify, based on the landing zone heatmap, one or more regions of the landscape having potential landing zones and obstacles; and determine a location of a safe landing zone using a distance transform of the one or more regions of the landscape. The location of the safe landing zone is in an area within one of the potential landing zones that is farthest from the obstacles. The location of the safe landing zone is then stored in a database.

Abstract: Systems and methods for an auto-land system for a rotorcraft are provided. The system includes, a search light (SL) assembly configured to receive user input directing the SL to a point of interest (POI) and determine an actual SL orientation and an actual SL range to the POI; and, a searchlight controller operationally coupled to the search light assembly, and configured to: responsive to receiving a command to auto-land at the POI, begin (i) generating a desired trajectory from the rotorcraft actual orientation and rotorcraft actual range to the POI; (ii) generating guidance commands for navigating the rotorcraft in accordance with the desired trajectory; (iii) monitoring an actual SL range and an actual SL orientation; and (iv) generating controlling commands for the searchlight assembly in accordance with the coordinates of the POI.

Abstract: A vehicle navigation system can acquire a plurality of images with a camera; determine at least one feature in one or more image of the plurality of images; reduce, via image feature tracking, a rotational noise associated with a motion of the camera in the one or more images; determine one or more keyframes based on the one or more images with reduced rotational noise; determine an optical flow of one or more of the plurality of images based on the one or more keyframes; determine a predicted depth of the at least one feature based on the optical flow; determine a pose and a motion of the camera based on the optical flow and the predicted depth of the at least one feature; and determine a first pose and a first motion of the vehicle based on the determined pose and motion of the camera and gimbal encoder information.
