    摘要: An optical element includes a crystal of Li.sub.X Ta.sub.1-X NbO.sub.3 which has one of an x-surface and a y-surface, where X denotes an atomic fraction and 0.ltoreq.X.ltoreq.1. Proton-exchanged layers periodically extend on one of the x-surface and the y-surface of the crystal. Grooves extend in said one of the x-surface and the y-surface of the crystal, and have bottoms which are defined by surfaces of the proton-exchanged layers. Ordinary light which has passed through the proton-exchanged layers and the grooves is out of phase with respect to ordinary light which has passed through a region of the crystal outside the proton-exchanged layers and the grooves by a quantity of (2n+1).pi., where n denotes an arbitrary integer. Extraordinary light which has passed through the proton-exchanged layers and the grooves is out of phase with respect to extraordinary light which has passed through a region of the crystal outside the proton-exchanged layers and the grooves by a quantity of 2m.pi., where m denotes an arbitrary integer.

    摘要: The invention presents an optical element with which an optical head can be configured, in which there is little deterioration of the correctional effect when the objective lens shifts, as well as an optical head and an optical recording/reproducing apparatus using such an optical element. The invention also presents a novel optical recording/reproducing apparatus and optical recording/reproducing method. The optical element, includes a first voltage application electrode 13, a first opposing electrode 17 arranged in opposition to the first voltage application electrode 13, and a first phase changing layer 15 arranged between the first voltage application electrode 13 and the first opposing electrode 17. By changing a voltage between the first voltage application electrode 13 and the first opposing electrode 17, a phase that converts plane waves into spherical waves is imparted on light that is incident on the first phase changing layer 15.

    摘要: An information recording medium is provided that includes a recording portion (3), which is irradiated with a recording light or a reproducing light so that information is recorded or reproduced thereto or therefrom. The recording portion (3) contains a first phosphor and a photon-mode photosensitive material. The first phosphor has a property of absorbing a first light having a wavelength of λ1/n and then emitting a second light having a wavelength longer than that of the first light, where λ1 is a wavelength of the recording light. The photosensitive material absorbs the second light and then exhibits a change in an optical constant thereof. A n-photon absorption sensitivity of the first phosphor with respect to the recording light is greater than a n-photon absorption sensitivity of the photosensitive material with respect to the recording light, where n is an integer not less than 2.

    摘要: In a photodetector, the minimum size of the photodetection area for detecting a focus error signal from a light beam on the inner radius side of a hologram is made smaller than the minimum diameter of diffracted light beam spots (30, 31) for recording and reproduction, and when a CD is reproduced, a light beam close to the optical axis is made to significantly contribute to the focus error signal and the minimum size of the photodetection area for detecting the focus error signal from a light beam from the peripheral side of the hologram is made larger than the minimum diameter of diffracted light beam spots (130, 131) for recording and reproduction, whereby the focus error signal is made equal to the normal focus error signal when a DVD is reproduced, so that the focus offset variation caused when the base material thickness varies can be reduced.

    摘要: An optical head device includes a light source for emitting a light beam having a predetermined wavelength, an optical system for converging the light beam emitted from the light source on an information medium, and a light detector for receiving the light beam reflected from the information medium and detecting a focus error signal based on the received light beam. The light detector includes a plurality of pairs of photodetectors. The light detector generates the focus error signal based on a differential signal generated by each pair of the plurality of pairs of photodetectors. The plurality of pairs of photodetectors are arranged so that a fluctuation in the differential signal generated by at least one of the pairs of the plurality of pairs of photodetectors is cancelled by a fluctuation in the differential signal generated by at least another of the pairs of the plurality of pairs of photodetectors.
