A plasma display device comprises blue phosphor which restricts adsorption of water and hydrocarbon gases to a surface thereof, reduces degradation of luminance and chromaticity change, and improves discharge characteristic. Among phosphor layers used for a plasma display, a blue phosphor layer comprises one of compounds symbolized by Ba1-xMgAl10O17:Eux and Ba1-x-ySryMgAl10O17:Eux, of which phosphor contains 0.2 to 0.8 in number x of Eu atoms, and the Eu atoms comprises 25% to 85% concentration of bivalent Eu ions, and 15% to 75% concentration of trivalent Eu ions.

A plasma display device includes a blue phosphor composed of a compound represented by Me3MgSi2O8:Eu (where, Me is at least calcium (Ca), strontium (Sr), or barium (Ba)). Concentration of bivalent Eu ions is 45 to 95% and concentration of trivalent Eu ions is 5 to 55%, of the europium (Eu) atoms contained in the blue phosphor layer. The plasma display device has less luminance degradation in a panel manufacturing process, high luminance, and long lifetime.

A method of manufacturing a plasma display device which prevents the brightness of a phosphor layer from lowering is disclosed, and the method can form the phosphor layer in a stable manner because a nozzle is free from clogging. At least one of the phosphor layers has a green phosphor layer containing green phosphor having zero or positive charges and a crystal structure of Zn2SiO4:Mn. Green phosphor ink, whose major ingredient is the green phosphor, is applied through the nozzle to discharging cells, thereby forming the green phosphor layer. The green phosphor ink is formed of green phosphor powder coated with an oxide having positive charges, or the ink is formed by crushing the green phosphor powder originally having negative charges and a crystal structure of Zn2SiO4:Mn such that the powder changes to have positive charges.

A blue phosphor in a phosphor layer has a crystal structure of MeMgSi2O6:Eu or Me3MgSi2O8:Eu (where, Me contains at least one of Ca, Sr, and Ba) produced with a precursor that is obtained by any one of methods: an aqueous solution synthesis method, a spray synthesis method, a hydrothermal synthesis method, and a hydrolysis method. Phosphor layers (110G, 110B, and 110R) are made of combination of: blue and green phosphors that are positively charged on their surfaces and baked in an oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere to reduce oxygen vacancy, and have a β-alumina crystal structure; and a red phosphor made of an yttrium oxide compound. Uniformly forming such phosphor layers on the wall surfaces of barrier ribs (109) provides equal charge characteristics of the phosphors of respective colors, reduces oxygen vacancy in the phosphors, and inhibits adsorption of various gases in the panel production process. This can stabilize the discharge characteristics and prevent luminance degradation at driving the panel.

The present invention aims to inhibit water adsorption onto the surface of a blue phosphor(blue fluorescent material), decrease luminance degradation and chromaticity shift of a phosphor, or improve discharge characteristics thereof. Used in a phosphor for a plasma display is a blue phosphor in which trivalent Eu ions substitute for part of divalent Eu ions. This substitution eliminates oxygen vacancy in the vicinity of layers containing Ba atoms (Ba—O layers) in the blue phosphor, and thus inhibits water adsorption onto the surface of the blue phosphor, decreases luminance degradation and chromaticity shift of the phosphor, or improves discharge characteristics thereof.

The present invention relates to a plasma display device apt to increase luminance of a phosphor layer and prevent degradation of a discharge characteristic, and to a phosphor used for the device. This plasma display device has a green phosphor having a crystal structure of Zn2SiO4:Mn, and a monovalent oxide is substituted for part of the green phosphor. The monovalent oxide is one or more of lithium oxide (Li2O), sodium oxide (Na2O), potassium oxide (K2O), cesium oxide (Cs2O), rubidium oxide (Rb2O), copper oxide (Cu2O), and silver oxide (Ag2O). This structure allows reduction of oxygen defects occurring in the green phosphor, suppression of the luminance decrease of the green phosphor, and improvement of a discharge characteristic.
