In an apparatus for recording and reproducing a burst-like digital information signal, a methd capable of predicting the time of occurrence of a header indicating the head of the first data of a digital information signal during its reproduction from a recording medium. The digital signal includes a plurality of data blocks each including a header indicative of the head of the block, and each header includes the address of the block. During recording of the digital signal on the recording medium, a plurality of headers which are substantially the same as the headers of the data blocks and including addresses having given relations with the addresses of the data blocks are inserted in a clock regenerating signal recorded before the digital signal for regenerating the clocks for the signal. The headers are inserted at a period equal to the length of each data block so as to be synchronized with the headers of the data blocks.

Conventionally, in a write-once-read-many recording medium, management of recorded/unrecorded areas is required. However, it takes much time to check recorded areas on the whole disk area, and further, the delay of processing is not considered. To solve these problems, information of recorded/unrecorded area management is recorded as a table on a disk, and the table information is regulated so that management information can be efficiently stored. Further, it can be determined whether or not the latest management information is recorded on the disk by using a flag indicating whether or not the table data has been recorded on the disk.

A digital data recording/reproducing method includes the steps of: interleaving data on a PI code for each PI code of a 208-row ECC block; and converting a short burst error into random errors by dispersing errors on the PI codes. Moreover, the digital data recording/reproducing method increases correction capability against several bytes to several tens bytes of errors generated at random without changing burst error correction length by performing this processing for respective PI codes by using interleave rules that are different as much as possible from one another.

At this time, the initial value from random numbers used to generate the scrambling data is embedded in a reserve area of the recording medium and at the time of reproduction this is used to carry out descrambling. To solve the above problems, the present invention can record data in a management area in units smaller than ordinary units for recorded data to suitably record information in a limited management area and thereby efficiently use the user data area. At that time, the present invention simplifies interleave processing usually applied to ordinary recorded data, and performs the simplified interleave processing on a data structure (for data of small size) of the present invention so as to ensure the signal processing compatibility between the ordinary data and data having the data structure according to the present invention.
