A method of making a capillary splice includes applying pressure to a bore in a tube, applying heat to a portion of the tube to soften the portion of the tube, and forming a bubble within the bore in the heated portion under the influence of the pressure and heat. While forming the bubble, a diameter of the bore at the heated portion is measured to determine when the bubble has enlarged to a target size. When the bubble has enlarged to the target size, a force is applied along an axial axis of the tube to shape the bubble to a desired size.

Disclosed are synthetic silica glass body with a birefringence pattern having low fast axis direction randomness factor and glass reflow process. The glass reflow process comprises steps of: providing a glass tube having a notch; and thermally reflowing the glass tube to form a glass plate. The process can be advantageously used to produce fused silica glass plate without observable striae when viewed in the direction of optical axis. Also disclosed are optical members comprising the fused silica glass body and a process for reflowing glass cylinders.

A substantially transparent antistatic, impact resistant, molding composition and articles made from this composition. The composition includes a miscible mixture of a polycarbonate resin and a cycloaliphatic polyester resin, and an antistatic polymeric material wherein the mixture of the polycarbonate and the cycloaliphatic polyester resin is present in suitable proportions for substantially matching the index of refraction of the antistatic polymeric material, thereby enabling the composition, and any articles made from the composition, to be substantially transparent. The composition may be used in a variety of articles in the electrical and electronic equipment, electronic packaging, and healthcare fields, as well as others.

Disclosed are refractory body and refractory vessel for reforming or reflowing glass materials. The refractory body and vessel have gas venting channels, including surface grooves and/or vias formed on the surface in contact with the glass during high temperature treatment thereof. The refractory body and vessel are particularly advantageous for reflowing fused silica glass at an elevated temperature such as above 1700° C.

Disclosed is a method for treating glass and crystalline inorganic materials whereby metal contamination during such process is inhibited. Such process includes treating the material in the presence of a purifying atmosphere comprising a cleansing gas. The process is especially advantageous for treating high purity fused silica glass for use in advanced lithographic devices.
