A mobile station (MS) generates a ranging code in which a covering code has been applied to each of a plurality of orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) symbols, and maps the ranging code to a plurality of subcarriers constituting each of the OFDMA symbols. The ranging signal is generated by performing OFDMA modulation on each of the OFDMA symbols.

A base station (BS) allocates at least one first ranging channel, having a first structure, and at least one second ranging channel, having a second structure, to a ranging subframe.
