Abstract: A data recorder for punching document cards including a flat deck which extends between and transports the document cards between a hopper and a stacker. A punching mechanism and a printing mechanism operate on the cards as they pass longitudinally along the deck. The deck is horizontal longitudinally thereof and is inclined with respect to horizontal transversely of the deck so that the document cards are readily observable as they are operated upon. The machine includes means for turning the cards through 90* with respect to the deck as the cards pass into the stacker, so that a stack extending parallel with the deck is formed. The hopper holds a stack of document cards so that they extend downwardly at an acute angle with respect to the deck, and a pick roll moves the cards off of the top of the stack in the hopper down on to the deck, rendering the top card in the hopper readily observable and replaceable.

Abstract: A data recorder for punching document cards which are of the type having three tiers into which encoded data may be punched, the system including a keyboard on which characters are entered serially, a magnetostrictive delay line constituting a storage device for storing encoded data from the keyboard in such serial form, and circuitry for actuating punches from spaced characters in the storage device so that a plurality of aligned columns in the plurality of tiers may be punched simultaneously. The data recorder includes printing mechanism for printing the data in corresponding tiers, and the same machine includes circuitry for verifying a punched document card utilizing the same keyboard as that used for punching.

Abstract: The invention relates to a unique input/output channel used in a data processing system. The channel couples a plurality of external devices and their control units to a central processing unit. The configuration of the channel is such that it allows each of the control units direct control over many of the central processing unit functions during an input/output cycle. It allows each of the control units to share the system''s main storage and central processing unit during these cycles. The design further allows for local store registers located in the central processing unit to be used as address registers for the external devices.

Abstract: An overrun protection circuit for a computing apparatus having a plurality of I/O devices with predetermined load-operating characteristics operated in an overlap mode of operation. The overrun protection circuit includes a logic circuit at each I/O device and a test circuit at the CPU which provides a summation of load operating characteristics of all I/O devices operating in the computing apparatus at a predetermined instant and a comparison of such sum with a signal indicative of the maximum load-operating characteristic for the computer. The comparison signal determines whether the particular I/O device may be added to those operating in the computing apparatus at that instant and initiates operation in the logic circuit to accept or reject the operation request from the CPU.
