What follows is the description of an improved hydraulic apparatus for the automatic adjustment of the inclination of the headlights of a motor vehicle, the adjustment being a dependent function of the axle load. The apparatus has a level sensor at each axle and each level sensor contains one metering piston and two positioning pistons. The rear axle level sensor is connected via two separate hydraulic lines to the front axle sensor, and the front axle sensor is in turn connected via two separate hydraulic lines to the positioning elements of the headlight housings. The internal construction of the two level sensors is substantially identical and is chosen such that the system is also suitable for manual adjustment.

The adjusting device (5) includes an electric motor (7) and a step-down gear unit which are accommodated in a housing part (12) which is arranged within the headlight housing (1). The step-down gear unit includes a small worm gear (8) and a large toothed wheel (9) with radial teeth. A rotational movement of the toothed wheel (9) is transformed via a thread between the toothed wheel (9) and the housing part (12) into a movement of the toothed wheel (9) along an axis (6) determining the adjusting direction. The toothed wheel (9) is connected with the reflector (2) via an articulated part (18). The housing part (12) is supported in the headlight housing (1) so as to be rotatable. A basic adjustment of the reflector (2) is possible from outside the headlight housing (1) via an adjusting part (26) acting on the housing part (12) by means of rotating the housing part (12).

A command transmitter is in the form of a step switch with a progressive bridging contact, the individual contacts of the step switch being connected to individual contacts of a contact array over which a slider mounted on the drive rod that actuates the headlight elevation position slides. The inertia of the moving drive rod carries the slider beyond the last energized contact of the array. If a single contact array is used, a restoring spring pushes back the drive rod until it again touches an energized contact and the drive executes a hunting movement that is designed to provide no appreciable disturbence of the headlight position. When a second contact array and slider are used, in cooperation with a second set of contacts and a second bridging contact at the command transmitter, a reversible drive is used and there is no hunting movement. A non-reversible drive is provided by an expansion chamber drive controlled by an electrical heater. A reversible electric motor is used in the reversible drive.

The present invention provides a a headlight operable as a running light of a vehicle and, in particular, as a headlight of the vehicle for selectively projecting a low and a high beam. The headlight includes a reflector having a light source disposed therein. A beam position adjusting device operates to move the light source between its low beam position and its high beam position. The beam position adjusting device includes an electric powered drive motor and a displaceable interconnecting element interconnecting the beam position adjusting device and the light source. The device also includes a motion translation element for translating the drive output of the drive motor to displacement of the displaceable interconnecting element, the beam position adjusting device being operable to dispose the light source in its high beam position. A return movement device automatically biases the light source to move to its low beam disposition when the drive motor is not powered.
