Abstract: Particular embodiments described herein provide for an electronic device that can be configured to include a first housing, one or more sensors located in the first housing, a second housing, and a slope located in the second housing to reflect light radiation to the one or more sensors when the first housing is over the second housing. The electronic device can be a laptop computer where the first housing is a lid that includes a display and the second housing is a base that includes a keyboard and the one or more sensors face the keyboard when the first housing is over the second housing when the laptop computer is in a closed configuration.

Abstract: Techniques for low power indoor/outdoor detection are disclosed. In the illustrative embodiment, an integrated sensor hub receives data from an accelerometer. The sensor hub processes the accelerometer data to determine an activity of the user. Depending on the activity of the user, the sensor hub may determine whether the compute device is indoors or outdoors or may receive data from additional sensors, such as a magnetometer, a gyroscope, or an ambient light sensor. The additional sensor data may be used to determine whether the compute device is inside or outside.

Abstract: Technologies for detecting micro-motion based input gestures include a wrist-wearable computing device that includes sensors from which values for micro-motion states can be determined. Each micro-motion state is indicative of a motion-related characteristic of the wrist-wearable computing device that is used to determine whether a sequence of detected gesture steps matches an input gesture model associated with an input gesture. The input gesture model defines a required sequence of required gesture steps from which an input gesture may be determined.

Abstract: An activity monitoring circuit enables power conservation for an activity monitoring system. The activity monitoring system includes a sensor device that generates activity data based on detected movement. An activity monitoring circuit receives the activity data as input from the sensor device, and processes the activity data. Based on the processing, the activity monitoring circuit signals the sensor device to change a duty cycle of its operation, by adjusting how long it is on and off. The activity monitoring circuit can include a sensor hub that determines an activity state indicated by the activity data and generates a prediction of stability of the determined activity state based on historical activity data. Based on activity state and stability, the sensor hub can determine a duty cycle for operation of the sensor device.

Abstract: Techniques are provided for unification of classifier models across device platforms of varying form factors and/or sensor calibrations. A methodology implementing the techniques according to an embodiment includes extracting classification features from data provided by sensors associated with a first device platform. The method also includes applying a feature mapping function to the extracted features. The feature mapping function is configured to transform the features such that the are suitable for use by a classifier model that is trained on data provided by sensors associated with a second device platform. The method further includes executing the classifier model on the transformed features to generate classifications, for example recognized activities associated with use of the first device. The feature mapping function is based on application of a statistical distribution distance minimization between a sampling of data provided by sensors of the first device and sensors of the second device.
