    Abstract: Examples relate to an amplification apparatus, device or method, to a Tap for a cable communication network comprising an amplification apparatus or device, and to a cable communication network comprising an amplification apparatus or device. The amplification apparatus comprises interface circuitry for exchanging a first version of a shared signal with a first component of the cable communication network. The shared signal is based on a frequency spectrum comprising at least a first frequency band and a second frequency band. The amplification apparatus comprises interface circuitry for exchanging a second version of the shared signal with a second component of the cable communication network. The amplification apparatus comprises amplifier circuitry configured to selectively amplify the first frequency band of the frequency spectrum of the shared signal, such that the first frequency band is amplified in the second version of the shared signal.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for detecting and locating a fault in a cable network. A cable modem may perform channel estimation to obtain a time domain channel response on an echo channel in a cable network. The cable modem then analyzes the time domain channel response to determine whether there is any change from a previously obtained time domain channel response on the echo channel. If there is a change from the previously obtained time domain channel response, the cable modem may generate an alert for a fault in the cable network and estimate a location of the fault based on the time domain channel response. Calibration may be performed to determine a reference latency for a reflection occurred inside the cable modem, and the location of the fault may be estimated based on the reference latency.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling a gain of an amplifier of a cable modem operating in a full duplex (FDX) mode. A cable modem includes an amplifier configured to amplify a received signal, a power meter configured to measure a power of the received signal on a plurality of channels, and a control unit configured to estimate a maximum expected power to receive on the plurality of channels based on the measured power and set a gain of the amplifier based on the maximum expected power. The cable modem is configured to operate in a full duplex mode. The channels include a full duplex upstream channel, a full duplex downstream channel, and a legacy downstream channel. The maximum expected power may be estimated via a sounding procedure. A power spectral density may be measured and the maximum expected power may be derived from the power spectral density.
