A distributed antenna and backhaul system provide network connectivity for a small cell deployment. Rather than building new structures, and installing additional fiber and cable, embodiments described herein disclose using high-bandwidth, millimeter-wave communications and existing power line infrastructure. Above ground backhaul connections via power lines and line-of-sight millimeter-wave band signals as well as underground backhaul connections via buried electrical conduits can provide connectivity to the distributed base stations. An overhead millimeter-wave system can also be used to provide backhaul connectivity. Modules can be placed onto existing infrastructure, such as streetlights and utility poles, and the modules can contain base stations and antennas to transmit the millimeter-waves to and from other modules.

A communication system has a plurality of stations which communicate data in a data frame having a plurality of slots, wherein the plurality of slots are new message minislots NMS, expansion minislots EMS, and data slots DS. A master station determines a range parameter R which is based upon a number of slave stations transmitting reservation requests in a data frame. The master station also determines a parameter MAP according to a number of reservation requests in a queue waiting to be processed by the master station. The parameter MAP defines the new message minislots, the expansion minislots, and the data slots in an upstream data frame. The master station transmits the range parameter R and the parameter MAP to a plurality of slave stations. Each slave station independently determines a random transmission parameter RN. Each slave station transmits to the master station (i) a new reservation request in a new message minislot if its random transmission parameter RN corresponds to the parameter MAP, (ii) an old reservation request in an expansion minislot if assigned an expansion minislot in the parameter MAP, and (iii) data in a data slot if assigned a data slot by the master station.

A time-sharing subscriber communications system wherein a timedivision multiplexed signal having a series of frames and a predetermined number of time slots in each frame is transmitted in a given frequency band over a single wideband circuit to a plurality of subscriber terminals. Various time slots contain information from various input channels which are respectively related to various ones of the subscriber terminals. The transmitted signal is modulated by a zero axis crossing modulation scheme wherein each time slot is defined by the interval between successive zero axis crossings and the information contained in each time slot is defined by the duration of the time slot. At each subscriber terminal the information related to that channel is tapped off from the signal received from the transmitter terminal, a portion of the received signal is retransmitted over the wideband circuit and new information related to the subscriber terminal is newly transmitted in one or more time slots of each frame of the timedivision multiplexed signal. A receiver terminal, interfaced to the opposite end of the wideband circuit from the transmitter terminal, demodulates the newly transmitted information from the subscriber terminal and provides output signals to various output channels respectively related to various ones of the subscriber terminals.
