Abstract: Method and apparatus for controlling heat transfer between two objects. In one embodiment, an apparatus for controlled heat transfer is disclosed herein. The apparatus includes a first and second conductive elements, a container of magnetorheological fluid disposed between the first and second conductive elements, an electromagnet disposed about the container, wherein the electromagnet is configured to produce a magnetic field within the container of magnetorheological fluid and conductively couple the first and second conductive elements, and at least one biasing element wherein the biasing element is coupled to the first conductive element and is configured to move the first conductive element relative to the container to conductively couple and uncouple the first conductive element and the second conductive element.

In one embodiment, the method includes flowing a current through an electromagnet disposed about a container holding magnetorheological fluid to bias a first conductive element against a first end of the container and a second conductive element against a second end of the container to align particles in the magnetorheological fluid such that first conductive element is conductively coupled to the second conductive element; and reducing the current through an electromagnet such that the first conductive element is biased away from the first end of the container and the second conductive element is biased away from the second end of the container to break the alignment of the particles in the magnetorheological fluid such that the first conductive element is not conductively coupled to the second conductive element.

Abstract: A method for assembling an integrated circuit device includes positioning a thermal interface material (TIM) on top of an electronic component, positioning a load frame onto a printed circuit board, the load frame having an open region for the electronic component to extend through, and positioning a heat sink onto the TIM. The method further comprises fastening a first screw fastener, resulting in a TIM bond line between the heat sink and the electronic component, and actuating a second screw fastener disposed within a bore of the heat sink and threaded into the load frame. The second screw fastener, upon being tightened expands radially to lock the heat sink into the load frame. The first screw fastener, upon the tightening of the second screw fastener, connects the heat sink and the load frame to the printed circuit board.

Abstract: A method for assembling an integrated circuit device includes positioning a thermal interface material (TIM) on top of an electronic component, positioning a load frame onto a printed circuit board, the load frame having an open region for the electronic component to extend through, and positioning a heat sink onto the TIM. The method further comprises fastening a first screw fastener, resulting in a TIM bond line between the heat sink and the electronic component, and actuating a second screw fastener disposed within a bore of the heat sink and threaded into the load frame. The second screw fastener, upon being tightened expands radially to lock the heat sink into the load frame. The first screw fastener, upon the tightening of the second screw fastener, connects the heat sink and the load frame to the printed circuit board.

Abstract: A fan assembly system includes two or more circular fans, each fan situated in a round fan assembly, where each fan can be situated in the round fan assembly in any orientation. The system also includes a concentrically symmetric connector for each circular fan, located in a center of each circular fan. The system also includes a latching mechanism for each circular fan, where the latching mechanism is wholly contained within a swept area of a fan blade of the circular fan. The circular fans are arranged in a staggered arrangement, and the staggered arrangement of circular fans increases a number of circular fans that can be placed in the fan assembly system compared to a non-staggered arrangement.
