Abstract:
Liquified natural gas, ethane or propane is stored in a cavity in which the roof is supported on broken rock placed in the lake. Very cheap broken rock containing a large volume of voids, when piled,is provided by building the cavity on a rock formation, breaking the rock formation into small pieces by rippers or giant teeth pulled by giant tractors, sieving the broken rock into fractions with each fraction having rock pieces with a minimum to maximum size ratio of 0.5, and piling the rock fractions without substantial mixing in the cavity. This allows storage cavities to be built at a fraction of the former cost and that also can not be damaged by sabotage and riots like former storage can be.
Abstract:
Wheels capable of supporting vehicles at velocities from 100 to 800 miles per hour with little loss of power are made with 0.25 inch square shallow cups on the treads. The wheels rotate at the speed of travel practically eliminating shear stresses between the wheel tread and the water in a trough a wheel has as a track. The cups press down on the water but air is trapped in the cups which acts as a cushion to prevent excessive pressures on the water at points which cause power losses.
Abstract:
A TWENTY-STAGE VACUUM EVAPORATOR IS MADE FROM A SERIES OF 20 SLOPING SHEETS OF POLYESTER PLASTIC FILM SEPARATED BY 0.5 INCH DIAMETER PEBBLES. THE PLASTIC SHEETS OF FILM SLOPE AT A 15* ANGLE AND ARE SUPPORTED 8 INCHES APART BY AND IN A BED OF THE PEBBLES. PUMPS CIRCULATE THE LIQUID SOLUTION EVAPORATED OVER THE UPPER SURFACES OF THE PLASTIC SHEETS OF FILM AND THE LIQUID IS EVAPORATED BY VAPORS CONTACTING AND CONDENSING ON THE UNDER SURFACES OF THE PLASTIC SHEETS, WITH EACH SHEET DIVIDING OFF A CHAMBER THAT EVAPORATES LIQUID AT A SUC ESSIVE LOWER PRESSURE. CONDENSATE FORMED BY THE VAPORS CONDENSING ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE PLASTIC SHEETS IS PREVENTED FROM MIXING WITH THE LIQUID SOLUTION BEING EVAPORATED BY A SERIES OF SHORT PLASTIC SHEETS, PLACED AT A SMALLER ANGLE WITH THE HORIZONTAL THAN THE LARGER SHEETS, THAT CATCH THE CONDENSATE LIKE SHINGLES ON A HOUSE AND DIRECT THE CONDENSATE INTO BOTTOM OUTLETS.
Abstract:
In a turbine driven generator of three phase alternating current the field is stationary and the conductors are mounted on a rotating cylindrical shell of hollow plastic. Outside the shell is kept helium maintained at 3000 pounds per square inch pressure and inside the plastic cylindrical shell is maintained at atmospheric pressure, the difference in pressures resisting the high centrifugal stresses on the plastic and permitting the conductors to have a velocity relative to the magnetic field of 50 percent to 100 percent greater than conventional design. THe gas at 300 p.s.i. is picked up by scoops on the rotor and is forced through tubes in the plastic where the conductors lie producing an unusually good cooling effect and permitting much higher current flow rates in the conductors than usual. Streamlining of the parts contacting gas at high velocities is very good where desired and the efficiency of the generator is very high. The above generator can be easily adapted to make a very efficient direct current motor or generator.
Abstract:
HOLLOW THICK WALLED CYLINDERS SUITABLE FOR WELDING TOGETHER TO MAKE LARGE VESSELS THAT WILL WITHSTAND 1000 TO 5000 POUNDS PER SQUARE INCH INTERNAL PRESSURES ARE MADE BY CASTING A HOLLOW CYLINDER, OUT OF STEEL, THAT HAS TWICE THE WALL THICKNESS THAT IS DESIRED. THEN THE CASING IS CUT LONGITUDINALLY INTO TWO HOLLOW CYLINDERS OF THE DESIRED ONE-HALF WALL THICKNESS OF THE CAST CYLINDER BY ELECTROCHEMICAL MACHINING. THIS BRINGS ANY INTERNAL CAVITIES TO THE SURFACE ON THE TWO CUT APART CYLINDRICAL SHELLS AND THE CAVITIES CAN BE CHEAPLY REPAIRED BY GRINDING AND WELDING.
