A temperature responsive electrical switching device provides an electrical connection between first and second electrical connectors when the temperature of the device is less than a predetermined threshold temperature and terminates the electrical connection when the temperature of the switching device exceeds the predetermined threshold temperature. The device includes a non-conductive mounting post assembly and stationary and movable contact blades mounted thereon. A temperature responsive bimetal blade cooperates with a non-conductive actuator to move the flexible contact blade out of contact with the stationary contact blade when the predetermined threshold temperature is exceeded. The actuator means includes a non-conductive means defining a cavity holding a quantity of resin which engages the flexible contact blade. By placing the switching device in an oven at a selected temperature, the actuator means is moved by the bimetal blade to the desired position for proper calibration. Subsequently the resin is cured and the position of the actuator means thereby fixed with respect to the flexible contact blade. A switching device including two flexible contact blades and two stationary contact blades, with one set of blades actuated at a maximum predetermined temperature threshold and the other set of blades actuated at a minimum predetermined threshold temperature is calibrated in a similar manner.

A thermostatic electrical switch and method of switch assembly are disclosed for a switch which provides an electrically conductive path when the temperature of the switch is below a threshold temperature and which opens the path when the temperature of the switch exceeds the threshold temperature. A conductive base plate has a bimetal thermostatic snap element attached at first end of the snap element to the top of the base plate and making electrical contact therewith. The snap element is generally concave upwardly when its temperature is less than the threshold temperature and snaps to a straightened position when its temperature is above the threshold temperature. An electrical snap contact is mounted on the upper surface of the snap element adjacent a second end of the snap element and is electrically connected to the snap element. A conductive cap covers the snap element and is welded to the base plate around a portion of the periphery of the cap, thereby forming a casing with the base plate. The casing defines a casing cavity, in which is positioned the snap element, and further defines an opening communicating with the casing cavity. An electrically conductive terminal has a connector at a first end and a terminal contact at a second end thereof. A mounting means is positioned in the opening for mounting the terminal, such that the terminal extends through the opening. The terminal contact is in contact with the snap contact when the temperature of the snap element is less than the threshold temperature. An electrical path is thereby provided from the casing to the conductive terminal, via the snap element and the snap contact, until the temperature of the switch exceeds the threshold temperature. When the temperature of the switch exceeds the threshold temperature, the snap element snaps to a straightened position, breaking the conductive path between the terminal contact and the snap contact.

An electrical thermostatic switch, prior to calibration, has a flexible blade which is spring biased into contact with a thermostatic member. The end of the blade is submerged in a heat curable material. The switch is placed in an oven at a predetermined temperature level for calibration, with the result that the thermostatic element moves the flexible blade into the desired calibration position prior to curing of the heat curable material. The flexible element is thereafter held by the cured material in the desired calibration position.

The actuator means includes first and second actuators which are embedded in a curable material. The switching device is calibrated adjusting the position of a movable contact and a snap contact and heating the switching device to the first predetermined temperature. The curable material is thereafter cured to fix the positions of the first and second actuators with respect to the bimetal blade.

A combination thermostat tip switch assembly in which a bimetal member carrying a double-faced contact is mounted in a stack assembly between two resilient contact leaves each carrying an electrical contact adapted to mate with the double-faced contact. The stack is mounted on a rigid base member which supports an adjusting mechanism adapted to cooperate with one of the contact leaves so as to provide an adjustment of the operating temperature of the thermostat. A position sensitive mechanism in the form of a pendulum is mounted on one of the contact leaves and cooperates with the other contact leaf to move the two away from one another.
