A method and apparatus is provided for operating a direct electrostatic printer whereby no printer adjustments are required by the operator. The direct thermal printer includes a print head and a variable speed motor for reproducing images on an imaging element. The method for operating the direct electrostatic printer includes the steps of: receiving medical image data representing the medical images; processing one or more printing prerequisites provided with the medical image data for controlling heating energy applied to the print head and for controlling the speed of the variable speed drive motor; generating a control signal from the printing prerequisites for controlling the speed of the variable speed drive motor; automatically configuring the printer in a plurality of operating modes using the control signal; passing the imaging element adjacent the print head by means of the variable speed drive motor; and heating the print head in accordance with the medical image data and the printing prerequisites to form the medical images on the imaging element. In addition, the printer is capable of operating in at least two modes, including a standard quality operating mode in which the variable speed drive motor is operated at a first speed, and at least one premium quality operating mode in which the variable speed drive motor is operated at a second speed slower than the first speed.

A method for recording an image on a thermographic material (m) provides a thermographic material, a transparent thermal head (TH) having energizable heating elements (Hi), and a radiation beam (L). The heating elements of the thermal head are activated and the radiation beam is passed through transparent parts of the thermal head. Herein, the total energy resulting from the thermal head and from the radiation beam has a level corresponding to a gradation of the image to be recorded. Further embodiments comprise e.g. holding the thermographic material on one and a same drum during both an imagewise exposing step and a heating step.

An automatic feeder for a photographic copying machine includes a housing and a plate for supporting a stack of originals which are consecutively conveyed towards a transparent exposure plate positioned on the copying machine. The feeder is provided with adjustable tappet rollers mounted against the exposure plate to receive a front edge of an original moved along the exposure plate, without damaging the front edge. The plate for supporting the stack of originals includes adjustable stops for adjusting the plate to differing formats of the originals being processed. An adjusting lever connected to the adjustable stops for adjusting the latter is operatively connected to an adjustment device for adjusting the position of tappet rollers along the exposure plate. Pivotable transport rollers are provided to hold the original against the exposure plate. The housing of the feeder is pivotable relative to the housing of the copying machine between an open and closed position.
