A rotary member is rotated at high speed by a drive shaft having its axis coincident with the axis of the cylinder. The rotary member includes at least one paddle vertically aligned with the entry chute so that silica grains entering via the entry chute are thrown by the paddle against the inside wall of the cylinder and follow a path most of which is against the wall before leaving via the exit chute.

Heater means for heating the preform by means of a plasma torch are associated with material supply means, so as to enable the preform to be manufactured in layers. Preform/torch relative displacements, with or without material being supplied, lead either to a new layer of material being deposited on the preform, or to the most recent layer deposited being glazed. Said method interposes a one-ended reduction in layer length, starting from one of the intermediate layers, while a succession of concentric layers are being deposited on the preform in a manner such that the lengths of the layers are progressively reduced so that the preform tapers towards it ends. The one-ended reduction leads to a limitation of the thickness of a determined segment at the level of the layer deposited immediately prior to the reduction.

The invention provides a step index optical fiber which presents cladding having an index lower than the index of silica and a core with an index higher than the index of silica. The fiber is obtained by drawing a preform made by chemical vapor deposition using a deposition tube of index lower than the index of silica. Inner cladding of index substantially equal to the index of the deposition tube, and then a core of index higher than the index of the inner cladding are deposited in succession therein. The invention makes it possible to obtain a fiber having a large effective area, reduced attenuation, and suitable for being fabricated at low cost by chemical vapor deposition.

A process is described for making silica powder by a sol-gel process whereby an aqueous suspension is made of a silica-based raw material which includes particles containing chlorine, the pH of the suspension is adjusted to a value from 3 to 4.5 if necessary, the suspension is gelled, the gel obtained is dried and the dried gel is fractionated into silica granules. The silica-based raw material preferably includes particles containing chlorine having a specific surface area less than 80 m2/g and less than 5 wt. % relative to the total quantity of particles containing chlorine of silica particles having a specific surface area from 150 m2/g to 300 m2/g. The use of such powder to manufacture an optical fiber preform is also described.
