摘要: An optical fiber includes: a core portion including a center core doped with germanium; and a cladding portion having a refractive index lower than a maximum refractive index of the core portion and surrounding an outer periphery of the core portion. The cladding portion has a relative refractive index difference of a positive value equal to or lower than 0.1% with respect to pure silica glass, an alkali metal element is doped in the center core to be diffused, and a peak of a concentration distribution of the alkali metal element in a radial direction is positioned at a distance away from the center of the center core by two times or more a radius of the center core.

摘要: According to some embodiments a method of processing an optical fiber comprises the steps of: (i) drawing the fiber at a drawing rate of at least 30 m/sec; and (ii) cooling the drawn fiber in a gas at an average cooling rate less than 5000° C./s, such that said cooling reduces the temperature of the fiber from an entering temperature in the range between 1500° C. and 1700° C. to another temperature in the range between 1200° C. and 1400° C., the gas being at a temperature between 800° C. and 1500° C.; and the thermal conductivity κ of the gas being not greater than 1.5×10−4 cal/cm-s-K for at least one temperature within a range of 800° C. to 1500° C. at one atm (atmosphere) pressure absolute.

摘要: A technique is described for fabricating one or more optical devices in a carbon-coated optical fiber. A photosensitive optical fiber is provided having a hermetic carbon coating. Further provided is a laser having a beam output that is configured to inscribe one or more refractive index modulations into the optical fiber through the hermetic carbon layer while leaving the hermetic carbon layer intact. The laser is used to inscribe one or more optical devices into the optical fiber through the hermetic carbon layer.

摘要: Multi-core optical fiber ribbons and methods for making multi-core optical fiber ribbons are described herein. In one embodiment, a multi-core optical fiber ribbon includes at least two core members formed from silica-based glass and oriented in parallel with one another in a single plane. Adjacent core members have a center-to-center spacing ≧15 microns and a cross-talk between adjacent core members is ≦−25 dB. In this embodiment each core member is single-moded with an index of refraction nc, and a core diameter dc. In an alternative embodiment, each core member is multi-moded and the center-to-center spacing between adjacent core members is ≧25 microns. A single cladding layer is formed from silica-based glass and surrounds and is in direct contact with the core members. 摘要: A single mode optical fiber having a core made from silica and less than or equal to about 6.5 weight % germania and having a maximum relative refractive index Δ1MAX. The optical fiber also has an inner cladding surrounding the core and having a minimum relative refractive index Δ2MIN. A difference between a softening point of the core and a softening point of the inner cladding is less than or equal to about 20° C., and Δ1MAX>Δ2MIN. The single mode optical fiber may also have an outer cladding surrounding the inner cladding made from silica or SiON. The outer cladding has a maximum relative refractive index Δ3MAX, and Δ3MAX>Δ2MIN. A method for manufacturing an optical fiber includes providing a preform to a first furnace, the preform, drawing the optical fiber from the preform, and cooling the drawn optical fiber in a second furnace.
