The present disclosure provides a process for treating a hydrocarbon feedstock comprising: (a) feeding the hydrocarbon feedstock at a linear velocity equal to or less than 0.9 m/s to a first preheating zone in the convection section of a steam cracking furnace; (b) preheating the hydrocarbon feedstock in the first preheating zone to vaporize less than 99 wt. % of the hydrocarbon feedstock to form a vapor-liquid mixture; (c) separating at least a portion of the vapor-liquid mixture to form a vapor fraction and a liquid fraction; and (d) feeding at least a portion of the vapor fraction to the steam cracking furnace.

Hot, cracked effluent is removed to a quench header where it is pre-quenched with an oil containing crackable components, e.g., 1000° F.+ (538° C.+) boiling range bottoms taken from a vapor/liquid separator, cracking the bottoms to more valuable products, e.g., steam crack naphtha. The overhead of the separator is fed to a cracker, and then quenched with a quenching oil.

The process comprises at least two of the following conditions: (1) maintaining the bottoms under conditions to effect at least partial visbreaking; (2) reducing or eliminating partial vapor condensation during flashing by adding a heated vaporous diluent to dilute and superheat the vapor; (3) partially condensing the vapor within said flash/separation vessel by contacting with a condenser; (4) decoking internal surfaces and associated piping of the flash/separation vessel with air and steam; (5) utilizing a flash/separation vessel having an annular, inverted L-shaped baffle; and (6) regulating temperature in furnace tube banks used for heating by utilizing a desuperheater and/or an economizer. An apparatus for carrying out the process is also provided.

A process for reducing the rate of increase in pressure drop across a furnace convection section, the furnace convection section having a temperature profile. The process includes the steps of establishing a ratio of total dilution H2O to feedstock for the system, injecting a first portion of the total dilution H2O in the form of water into the convection section of the furnace, injecting a second portion of the dilution H2O in the form of steam into the convection section of the furnace, wherein a ratio of dilution H2O in the form of water to dilution H2O in the form of steam is established and varying the temperature profile across the convection section of the furnace by adjusting periodically the ratio of dilution H2O in the form of water to dilution H2O in the form of steam. A similar technique is conducted during decoking to remove asphaltene coke starting from the lower convection section upward. This upward decoking is accomplished by initially using more H2O in the form of water, then as the decoke proceeds reducing H2O in the form of water while increasing H2O in the form of steam.
