In TDMA systems it is possible to transmit data on more than one consecutive slot per frame. This introduces increased workloads on the power amplifier of the transmitter of the mobile station. To prevent the power amplifier from overheating, temperature sensing means are incorporated into the mobile station which output to a control system comprising a comparator and feedback means which together regulate the operation of the transmitter if the power amplifier approaches or exceeds it upper rated operating value. Thereby preventing the power amplifier from damage.

At each idle frame, the mobile station checks said operating mode and activities to be carried out and of the activities to be carried out, determines the one that has the highest priority on the basis of said operating mode. For example, if necessary, the number of idle frames used for synchronisation burst search can be arranged as high as possible and, thus, enhance synchronisation.

A method for quickly de-allocating physical channels (PDCH) assigned to packet switched calls in a GPRS supporting GSM digital cellular telephone network. An PDCH de-allocation RLC/MAC control message is broadcast to listening mobile stations from a base station subsystem (BSS) and contains a temporary flow identity (TFI) which is recognised by the listening mobile stations (MS). The mobile stations respond by terminating packet switched data transmissions on the identified PDCHs. The RLC/MAC message also identifies the number of PDCH time slots which can be used before de-allocation must occur.

To establish a mobile-terminated packet-switched connection, the mobile telephone network sends the mobile station a page request via a circuit-switched connection and subsequently sends the mobile station the additional information commanding the mobile station to switch to a packet-switched connection. After detecting the additional information, the mobile station switches to the packet-switched connection.

The invention relates to a method for transmitting speech and data simultaneously on a circuit switched two-way connection of a mobile communications system, which transfers speech and other data by use of discontinuous transmission, DTX, in which the sending is discontinued when it is indicated that there is no information to be sent, and continued when it is indicated that there is information to be sent. In accordance with the method of the invention, the data to be sent are stored in buffer means and wait to be sent. When it is indicated that there is no more information to be sent, the data stored in buffer means are sent until there is no more data to be sent or until it is indicated that there is information, speech or other data to be sent, in which case the sending of data is discontinued and the sending of speech or other data is re-started. So the transfer of data takes place as a background process during transfer of speech or other data. The data are arranged into frame structures while being stored in the buffer. The data are separated, for example, by identifiers placed at the beginning of the frame structures. The same traffic channel can be used for transferring both data and speech or other data. An alternative is to transfer the data on a fast associated control channel that belongs to the same circuit switched connection as the traffic channel.
