摘要: A seal for preventing passage of fluid through an opening in an electrolytic cell wall through which a conductor for carrying electricity to or from a cell electrode passes includes as elements thereof a portion of the cell wall opening which is tapered so as to be larger at the outer part of the wall than at the inner part, silicone rubber in the narrower tapered opening part, an electrolyte-resistant rubber, such as neoprene, in the wider tapered opening part and means for pressing such rubber against the silicone rubber so as to help seal the silicone rubber against the tapered cell wall and the conductor. Preferably, the seal is a gas-tight seal and prevents hydrogen from escaping into the atmosphere from the catholyte compartment of an electrolytic cell for the electrolysis of brine. Such a cell is preferably an externally connected (by conductors) bipolar cell but the invention is adaptable for use in sealing off openings in the cell walls between the electrolyte compartments of internally connected bipolar cells and for monopolar electrolytic cells too.

摘要: A molded electrolytic cell body or frame for housing electrodes and a membrane has a passageway therein communicating an anolyte drain header or manifold or an anolyte discharge header with the anolyte compartment of the cell, through which passageway a conductor of material resistant to electrolytic attack is passed to connect the liquid in the anolyte drain or discharge header with the anode. The conductor acts as a target anode and inhibits electrolytic damage to the anode, thereby lengthening its life.

摘要: An improved bipolar type electrolytic filter press cell for the electrolytic decomposition of ionizable chemical compounds is provided which comprises a cell housing containing a plurality of cell units made up of anode compartments each containing a bipolar anode element and cathode compartments each containing a bipolar cathode element, each of said anode compartments being maintained in spaced relationship with the cathode compartment of the adjoining cell unit by an electrically inactive cell separator which prevents electrolyte and gas flow from one cell unit to the adjoining cell unit, and means for transferring electrical energy from an anode element to the cathode element of the adjoining cell unit, said means comprising1. An electrically conductive hollow cylinder member capped on one end and fixedly attached to and in electrical contact with said anode element at said capped end, said cylinder member extending from said anode element to said cell separator,2. An electroconductive rod extending from said cathode element through said cell separator into said cylinder member and in electrical contact with said cylinder member, and3. Means for preventing electrolyte and gas leakage through said cell separator at the point where said electroconductive rod passes through said cell separator.
