    摘要: A method and closed system for high volume distillation of impure liquids comprises evaporating the impure liquid in an evaporator to form a vapor at a temperature above the freezing point and below the critical point, preferably the boiling point, of the liquid at ambient pressure and at a pressure not exceeding a pressure corresponding to the evaporation temperature under saturated conditions; compressing the vapor in compression means which preferably has a compression ratio variable in the range 1.2:1 to 250:1; operating the compression means by direct drive from a mechanical energy source or, preferably, by drivingly linking the compresion means to an auxiliary turbine and causing a gas flow, for example by combusting fuel, through the auxiliary turbine to motivate the auxiliary turbine and, through the drive link, to drive the compression means; cooling the vapor in a condenser means disposed in heat transfer relation with the impure liquid whereby the vapor at least partially condenses, transferring heat to the impure liquid for evaporating at least a portion thereof; and collecting the condensed vapor. The system may also include a coaxial expansion engine means shaft linked to the compression means to receive compressed vapor from the compression means and to produce shaft energy for driving the compression means as the vapor expands therethrough.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for high volume distillation of impure liquid, particularly of binary mixtures of relatively low boiling organic substances and water, comprises fractionally distilling the impure liquid to form a vapor of a low boiling organic substance; compressing the vapor; passing at least a portion of the compressed vapor through a vapor composition adjustment zone wherein the organic substance may catalytically or otherwise react or merely stabilize following compression; compressing the vapor exiting the adjustment zone to form a recompressed vapor; cooling the recompressed vapor in heat transfer relation with the impure liquid whereby the vapor at least partially condenses, transferring sufficient heat to the impure liquid for evaporating the liquid and to form the aforementioned low boiling organic vapor; and collecting the condensed low boiling organic vapor. In various embodiments of the invention the vapor exiting the adjustment zone may be expanded through an expansion engine and/or a portion of the compressed vapor may bypass the adjustment zone and/or the expansion engine and admix with the remainder of the vapor passing through the adjustment zone and/or expansion engine. Work may be added to the expansion engine by mechanical means, such as motor means, drivingly linked to the engine, by admixing hot gases directly with the compressed vapor passing through the expansion engine, by a combination of direct mechanical drive and direct mixing of hot gases, or by other suitable means.The method and apparatus are particularly suitable for producing substantially anhydrous ethyl alcohol.

    摘要: EtOH-H.sub.2 O binary mixtures to serve as raw feed liquids for distillation and vapor treatment systems intended for the production of substantially anhydrous ethyl alcohol are desirably derived from the fermentation or enzymatic conversion of sugars. A preferred source of sugars is honey which may be produced in massive volumes in environmental controlled structures containing vegetation, hives and bees which are associated with automted devices for emptying the hives of their accumulated honey. In one system, the honey is produced on honeycombs which are removed from the hives and emptied by immersion in hot water. Honey is recovered from a water solution thereof by separation of melted wax and fermented to a 6-12% beer suitable for use as a raw feed liquid.

Work may be added to the expansion engine by mechanical means, such as motor means, drivingly linked to the engine, by admixing hot gases directly with the compressed vapor passing through the expansion engine, by a combination of direct mechanical drive and direct mixing of hot gases, or by other suitable means.     摘要: A process for scouring, desizing and bleaching cotton greige goods comprises the steps of immersing the goods for a time sufficient to achieve commercial brightness in an aqueous solution have a temperature in the range from 100.degree. to 212.degree. F and consisting of from 0.3 to 70% by volume hydrogen peroxide, water and sufficient hydroxide to adjust the solution to a pH in the alkaline range, the solution being substantially free of heavy metal ions and maintained out of contact with all metals while the goods are immersed therein and cycling a portion of the solution through a filtration means to remove solid impurities therefrom while maintaining the volume, composition and pH of the solution in contact with the goods substantially the same. Preferably, the process is conducted as a simultaneous scouring, desizing and bleaching process in a temperature range 160.degree. to 212.degree. F in a solution including 1 to 50% by volume hydrogen peroxide, the goods being immersed in the solution for less than about 31/2 minutes. In another embodiment, the goods are immersed in an alkaline scour solution for from 5 seconds to 31/2 minutes prior to bleaching in the hydrogen peroxide solution, the alkaline scour solution having a temperature in the range 160.degree. - 212.degree. F and a pH from 10 to 14. Still another embodiment of the invention includes the alkaline scour plus an acid scour, in any sequence, prior to bleaching in the hydrogen peroxide solution.

    摘要: Chemical bleaching pretreatment processes are provided for cotton goods and other cellulosic materials which have the effect of enhancing the bleached cloth whiteness levels and/or reducing the bleaching time or intensity. The goods may be pretreated by intimately contacting them, as by immersion in a bath, in an alkaline scour solution having a pH of 10 to 14 and a temperature of 160.degree.-212.degree. F. for from 5 seconds to 31/2 minutes. A second and separate pretreatment involves immersing the goods in such an alkaline scour solution and, immediately prior or subsequent thereto, in an acid solution having a pH less than about 3 at a temperature in the range 45.degree. to 212.degree. F. for from 1 to 10 seconds. Optionally, either the alkaline scour pretreatment or the combination acid/alkaline scour pretreatment may be preceded by an up to 31/2 minute water dip or rinse in water ranging from just above ambient to 212.degree. F. In some cases the water dip or rinse without alkaline scour or acid/alkaline scour may constitute the entire bleaching pretreatment.

In a preferred form of the invention, the scouring, desizing and bleaching are accomplished simultaneously. In another embodiment of the invention, the goods are immersed in alkaline scour solution for from 5 seconds to 31/2 minutes prior to bleaching in the hydrogen peroxide solution, the alkaline scour solution having a temperature in the range 160.degree. to 212.degree. F and a pH from 10 to 14. In still another embodiment of the invention, the goods are immersed in an alkaline scour solution and an acid solution, in any sequence, prior to bleaching in the hydrogen peroxide solution.
