    摘要: In at least some embodiments, an optical module package includes a housing, a plurality of optical fiber cables connected to the housing, and optical fiber connectors terminating each cable. Each optical fiber cable may include an optical fiber, two concentric flexible protective tubes enclosing the fiber, and aramid (e.g. Kevlar®) fibers disposed between the protective tubes. Each protective tube is capable of longitudinally sliding relative to the optical fiber along at least part of the cable, to release stresses resulting from differential thermal expansion of the optical fiber and the protective tubes. Each optical fiber may be held fixed relative to the housing and distal connectors, and one or both of the ends of the protective tubes may be free to move. The protective tubes may also be held fixed relative to the housing, and the optical fiber(s) allowed to move within the housing.

    摘要: A wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) apparatus and a WDM method are disclosed. The apparatus generally comprises an optical interleaver coupled to one or more WDM modules. Two or more interleaver modules may be cascaded together to expand the channel handling capacity. Alternatively, two or more WDM modules may be cascaded together to divide the even and odd channels into subsets. The interleaver interleaves a first signal, containing one or more odd channels and one or more even channels with a second signal, containing a portion of the odd channels and a third signal containing a portion of the even channels. A characteristic frequency spacing between adjacent even channels in the second signal and/or a characteristic spacing between adjacent odd channels in the third signal is about two or more times the value of a characteristic frequency spacing of adjacent channels in the first signal.

    摘要: An optical interleaver apparatus and method are disclosed. The apparatus comprises a first birefringent element, a first waveplate, a second birefringent element, a polarization rotation device and a retro-reflector. The first birefringent element separates an input optical signal into first and second beams having complementary polarizations. The first waveplate rotates a polarization of light in a first wavelength range, but not a second wavelength range. The second birefringent element splits the first and second beams into third, fourth, fifth and sixth beams. The polarization rotation device and retro-reflector are configured such that, on a reverse path, the second birefringent element combines the third beam with the sixth beam and the fourth beam with the fifth beam. The inventive apparatus may operate as either a demultiplexer or multiplexer. In an alternative embodiment, the apparatus includes a switchable polarization rotator disposed between the first birefringent element and the first waveplate. The switchable polarization rotator allows the apparatus to operate as a router by either rotating or not rotating the polarizations of the first and second beams.

    摘要: A wavelength slicing apparatus and method includes two filters having passbands offset from each other and from a signal channel. The offset passbands enhance transmission where they overlap and reduce transmission where they do not overlap such that transmission of optical signals in a neighboring channel is suppressed. A third filter having a passband centered on the signal channel frequency may be included to enhance optical signal isolation. Wavelength slicing techniques may be used for channel isolation or passband flattening. Wavelength slicing can be incorporated into wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical switching to improve optical isolation between channels during routing, multiplexing and demultiplexing operations.
