There is described an inspection system (50) for in-line inspection of sheet or web material on an intaglio printing press, wherein the inspection system comprises an optical quality control apparatus for carrying out inspection of a printed area on a printed side of the sheet or web material, the optical quality control apparatus including a camera system (55) with one or more camera units each comprising at least one line-scan camera (56) for scanning and acquiring an image of the printed area while the sheet or web material is being transported in the intaglio printing press past the camera system (55). A location of the at least one line-scan camera (56) in the intaglio printing press along a delivery path of the sheet or web material is such that cyclical vibrations that spread periodically throughout the intaglio printing press during operation of the intaglio printing press do not occur while the camera system (55) is scanning the printed area of the sheet or web material and acquiring a complete image of the printed area.

There is described a sheet-fed or web-fed printing press for numbering and varnishing of security documents, including banknotes, comprising: —a numbering group (02) comprising at least one numbering unit (21, 22) for numbering printed material in the form of individual sheets or successive portions of a continuous web carrying multiple security imprints; and—a varnishing group (03; 03*) located downstream of the numbering group (02) for applying varnish onto recto and verso sides of the printed material, the varnishing group (03; 03*) comprising at least a first varnishing unit (31) disposed above a path of the printed material to apply varnish on the recto side of the printed material and at least a second varnishing unit (32) disposed below the path of the printed material to apply varnish on the verso side of the printed material.

The sheet-fed or web-fed printing machine comprises a main unit (1), at least one mobile carriage (2) adapted to be coupled to the main unit for cooperation therewith during printing operations and to be moved away from the main unit during maintenance operations, a control unit for controlling displacement of said mobile carriage toward and away from said main unit, and an access zone (9, 9′) surrounding at least partly the mobile carriage for allowing a human operator to get access to the main unit and mobile carriage, which access zone lies outside of the displacement path (10) of the mobile carriage. The printing machine further comprises detection means (11) for monitoring the access zone and detecting presence of a human operator within the access zone. The control unit is operatively connected to the detection means so as to interrupt or prevent displacement of the mobile carriage in case presence of a human operator is detected within the access zone by the detection means and before the human operator penetrates in the displacement path of the mobile carriage.

The letterpress printing machine includes an impression cylinder (8), at least one inking device (11, 12, 13) with an inking train comprising inking rollers (25, 26, 28) and at least one letterpress form cylinder (14, 15, 16) inked by said at least one inking device (11, 12, 13). The at least one letterpress form cylinder (14, 15, 16) is driven by first drive means (30), whereas the at least one inking device (11, 12, 13) is driven by second drive means (31, 32, 33), the second drive means (31, 32, 33) being mechanically independent from the first drive means (30). A control unit is coupled to the second drive means (31, 32, 33) to adjust a circumferential speed of the inking rollers (25, 26, 28) with respect to a circumferential speed of the letterpress form cylinder (14, 15, 16) so as to adjust deposition of ink by the inking device (11, 12, 13) on the letterpress form cylinder (14, 15, 16). At least one of letterpress form (14, 15, 16) cylinder is preferably a numbering cylinder for numbering printed sheets or webs.

The machine further comprises a paper sheet feed device, a device for transporting the paper and a unit for applying security images (7) supported by at least one ribbon (8, 8a). The ribbon is brought into contact with the paper (1) so that the images (7) are applied at determined points on the paper. The application unit comprises an applicator cylinder (5) fitted with pads (52) in register with determined points on the sheets (1) and cooperates with a press cylinder (4), between which cylinders the paper (1) passes. The ribbon (8, 8a) is mounted between two reels (B1, B2) for paying out the ribbon and (25) for winding up the ribbon. The machine is equipped with a device (13) for preheating the ribbon (8, 8a) upstream of the applicator cylinder (5) so as to preheat the images (7) which will be applied to the sheet of paper (1) by simple contact of said pads (52) with the images (7) against the press cylinder (4).

The location of the sheet or web edge can be measured accurately even if the edge has various anomalies. The optical system provides different images of the web or sheet edge in two directions.

A cylinder element adjusting device utilizes one or more translatable threaded bolts to adjust the positions of cylinder carried elements such as front lay marks. Each threaded bolt carries a gear wheel which is rotatable in incremental steps by a drive ratchet that is driven from a pulse-controlled work cylinder. No electrical energy is transmitted to the cylinder.
