摘要:
A smearfast, waterfast, and fast drying ink is provided, employing macromolecular chromophores (MMCs) and both ionic surfactants and zwitterionic, or amphoteric, surfactants, in which the ionic surfactant is of the opposite polarity of the MMC. Macromolecular chromophores are pigments whose surface has been treated to provide either anionic or cationic functional groups thereon. The zwitterionic surfactant gives rise to waterfastness, while the ionic surfactant gives rise to both smearfastness and fast drying.

The present invention relates to ink-jet ink compositions that comprise macromolecular chromophores having functional groups covalently attached for water solubility. Moreover, the MMCs have polymer chains covalently attached to the pigments by nucleophilic substitution to provide enhanced smearfastness, enhanced print quality, improved bleed control, and improved resistance to water when applied to the media. These inks have good viscosity and surface tension, are more soluble in organic solvents and are, therefore, useful in ink-jet printing, including thermal ink jet printing, piezoelectric ink jet printing, and continuous ink jet printing.

The present invention relates to ink-jet ink compositions that comprise modified pigment particles (macromolecular chromophores) having functional groups covalently attached for water solubility and polymer chains covalently attached to the pigments. These pigmented inks have enhanced smearfastness, enhanced print quality, improved bleed control, and improved resistance to water when applied to the media. Moreover, these inks have good viscosity and surface tension. These inks are useful in ink-jet printing, including thermal ink jet printing, piezoelectric ink jet printing, and continuous ink jet printing.

A process is provided for purifying macromolecular chromophores (MMCs), which are pigments that have been surface-treated to be water-soluble. In the surface treatment, anionic or cationic functional groups are covalently bonded onto the surface, these functional groups have undesirable counter-ions associated with them that adversely affect the properties of ink-jet inks in which the MMCs are incorporated. The purification process comprises: (a) forming an aqueous solution of the macro-molecular chromophore; (b) adding to the aqueous solution an amount of a liquid containing a desirable counter-ion; (c) subjecting the aqueous solution to membrane filtration; and (d) repeating steps (b) and (c). Inks prepared from MMCs that are purified as described above evidence significant improvement in reliability, which includes reduced crusting, reduced kogation, and improved long term ink stability.

The ink of the invention comprises a vehicle and a colorant. The colorant is a water-insoluble macromolecule that has been chemically modified to be water soluble by addition of functional groups to the surface of the chromophores resulting in water soluble colorant particles. The resulting chromaphore is called a macromolecular chromophore (MMC). The performance of these MMCs is improved by substitution of (a) the normal counter-cations with substituted ammonium cations or (b) the normal counter-anions with any of a variety of organic and inorganic anions. The inks described herein demonstrate high edge acuity, high optical density, fast drying times, high waterfastness, and high smearfastness.

In accordance with embodiments of the present invention, an ink-jet ink can comprise a metallized phthalocyanine dye and a liquid vehicle carrying the dye. The liquid vehicle can include an amine additive present in the ink-jet ink at an effective concentration to cause improvement of ozone fastness. The improvement can be determined by comparing the ozone fastness of the ink-jet ink with a control ink-jet ink that does not include the amine additive.

The ink of the invention comprises (a) a vehicle comprising (1) about 1 to 50 wt % of at least one organic solvent as humectants, and (2) about 0.01 to 20 wt % of at least one water-soluble surfactant or amphiphilic polymer (cationic, anionic, or non-ionic); (b) about 1 to 20 wt % of at least one partial chemically-modified, water-soluble colorant, the colorant having sufficient functional groups associated therewith to be substantially waterfast in deionized water while being sufficiently stable in the ink to avoid flocculation; and (c) the balance water. The use of a partial chemically-modified, water-soluble colorant (macromolecular chromophore) results in an ink that is both waterfast and non-flocculating.

Two-part fixatives are provided in conjunction with overcoating at least one ink-jet ink printed on a print medium and comprise (1) at least one first reactive component comprising a reactive monomer or oligomer, the reactive species selected from the group consisting of iso-cyanates and epoxy-terminated oligomers, optionally in a vehicle, and (2) at least one second component selected from the group consisting of polyols and polyvinyl alcohols, plus one or more base catalysts, optionally in a vehicle. The two components and catalyst(s) are deposited on the print medium on which the ink-jet ink has been printed, and react to form a hydrophobic polymer overcoating the printed ink and having a glass transition temperature within a range of −20° C. to +50° C. and a melting temperature within a range of 30° C. to 100° C.

The ink of the invention comprises a vehicle and a colorant, with the vehicle comprising a microemulsion containing at least one substantially water-insoluble organic oil, at least one organic cosolvent, and water and, optionally, at least one amphiphile and at least one high molecular weight colloid. The colorant is a water-insoluble chromaphore that has been chemically modified to be water-soluble by addition of functional groups that impart water solubility. These functional groups are added to the surface of the chromaphore particles, resulting in water-soluble colorant particles. The inks described herein demonstrate high edge acuity, high optical density, fast drying times, reduced bleed, improved halo characteristics, high water fastness, and high smearfastness.

Anti-bronzing agents are added to ink-jet inks to prevent bronzing of the inks when printed on various types of media. The additive can be an amine anti-bronzing agent that is protonated when the ink-jet ink is printed on the print medium.
