An aqueous ink-jet ink composition for printing on offset media is disclosed comprising an ink colorant, an effective amount of at least one surfactant, and an effective amount of at least one aprotic polar solvent wherein the solvent is comprised of molecules having a molecular weight from 40 to 1500. Optionally, an effective amount of a non-aprotic polar solvent can be added. The aqueous ink-jet inks of the present invention are effective for printing on many commercially available offset papers and other media.

The present invention relates to ink-jet ink compositions that comprise modified pigment particles (macromolecular chromophores) having functional groups covalently attached for water solubility and reactive moieties covalently attached to the pigments. MMC with such reactive moieties attached can either a) react directly with cellulose or other textile material or, b) can participate in polymerization reactions. These reactive moieties may in turn be further derivatized to provide the desirable attribute, such as enhanced smearfastness, enhanced print quality, improved bleed control, and improved resistance to water when applied to the media. Moreover, inks formulated with these reactive MMCs demonstrate viscosity and surface tension characteristics that are useful in ink-jet printing. This includes thermal ink jet, piezoelectric ink jet, and continuous ink jet printing.

An ink-jet ink set comprises (a) a microemulsion-based black ink in which the colorant is a water-insoluble black pigment has been chemically modified to impart water solubility by addition of functional groups to form a macromolecular chromophore and (b) at least one non-black (cyan, yellow, or magenta) ink that is a typical aqueous dye-based ink with an agent that increases the ionic strength of the no-black ink and comprises either an inorganic salt or an organic acid; the organic acid is used to adjust the pH of the non-black ink to a value of less than 5. The non-black ink may alternatively comprise a water-insoluble non-black pigment that has also been chemically modified. The macromolecular chromophore-containing ink, or pigment-based ink, of the ink-jet ink set is a microemulsion that contains a substantially water-insoluble organic oil, an organic co-solvent, and water and, optionally, an amphiphile and a high molecular weight colloid. By employing an ink set in which some of the members of the set have a higher ionic strength than the black, microemulsion-based ink, then bleed alleviation can be achieved. When the higher ionic strength ink comes in contact with the lower ionic strength microemulsion ink, the rapid change in ionic strength of the microemulsion causes flocculation of the dissolved modified pigment. The result of the flocculation is that the colorant is precipitated on the print medium. It is no longer capable of diffusion into the other ink, thereby alleviating bleed, nor is it capable of penetration into the medium, thereby resulting in improved color density and edge acuity. The inks described herein also exhibit fast drying times, high waterfastness, and high smearfastness. They also show reduced problems with inter-color bleed and show no halo effect.

The ink of the invention comprises a vehicle and a colorant, with the vehicle comprising a microemulsion containing at least one substantially water-insoluble organic oil, at least one organic cosolvent, and water and, optionally, at least one amphiphile and at least one high molecular weight colloid. The colorant is a water-insoluble chromaphore that has been chemically modified to be water-soluble by addition of functional groups that impart water solubility. These functional groups are added to the surface of the chromaphore particles, resulting in water-soluble colorant particles. The inks described herein demonstrate high edge acuity, high optical density, fast drying times, reduced bleed, improved halo characteristics, high water fastness, and high smearfastness.

The liquid vehicle can include an amine additive present in the ink-jet ink at an effective concentration to cause improvement of ozone fastness. The improvement can be determined by comparing the ozone fastness of the ink-jet ink with a control ink-jet ink that does not include the amine additive.

In one embodiment of the invention, an integrated device is described that employs a mechanism to control power consumption of a graphics memory controller hub (GMCH) through both voltage and frequency adjustment of clock signal received from a clock generator. The GMCH comprises a graphics core and a circuit to alter operational behavior, such as the frequency of a render clock signal supplied to the graphics core. The circuit is adapted to monitor idleness of the graphics core and reduce a frequency level of the render clock signal if the idleness exceeds a determined percentage of time.
