Systems and methods are provided for automatically adjusting the operational parameters of a blood separation procedure. A blood separation device has an inlet for passing fluid thereinto and an outlet for removing fluid therefrom. A pump system is provided for moving fluid into and out of the device. In use, blood is conveyed into the device, where platelets are separated from at least a portion of the blood. A controller determines the amount of platelets in the device. Based at least in part on the amount of platelets in the device, corrective action is taken to avoid platelet aggregation in the device. The corrective action may be conveying an elevated amount of anticoagulant into the blood and/or the device and may be initiated when the determined amount of platelets approaches, meets, or exceeds a threshold predicted likelihood of platelet aggregation.

A data storage location of the system is pre-programmed with a plurality of subject data entries, each having subject-specific information associated with it. A user interface receives an identity input from a subject, which corresponds to the identity of the subject. A controller is associated with the database and the user interface, and is programmed to compare the identity input to the subject data entries. If the identity input corresponds to the subject-specific information of a subject data entry, the controller commands a treatment device to perform a medical procedure with respect to the subject. Otherwise, if the identity input does not correspond to the subject-specific information of any of the subject data entries, the controller generates an error signal which prevents the performance of the medical procedure with respect to the subject.

In an operating mode, the joint is free to have its inner and outer barrels move with respect to each other without engaging each other in a locking relationship. In a second position, the telescoping joint locks when it is fully retracted. In a third position, the system locks the inner and outer barrels together to hold them in a fixed position. The inner and outer barrels are locked when a movable sleeve is properly positioned to allow spring-loaded dogs to be biased through windows in the sleeve so as to act as a landing shoulder to catch a groove on the outer barrel. By putting the actuating sleeve in a variety of positions, the various modes of the locking assembly can be deployed.

The apparatus includes a radially tapered surface machined in the backface of the flanges to coact with the head of the threaded fastener as the threaded fastener is tightened to a predetermined torque value. This coaction compensates for flange deflection as the threaded fastener is tightened.

In a first embodiment, the stress reducing washer uses a tapered upper surface oriented with respect to the flange to compensate for flange deflection as the threaded fastener is tightened to a predetermined torque value. Second and third embodiments utilizing spherical and cylindrical surfaces are also shown. A fourth embodiment eliminates the need for the stress reducing washer and machines the tapered surface in the backface of the flange.
