The control device includes a first communication interface unit which transmits a control command in a first communication mode which uses a bi-directional wireless communication, a second communication interface unit which transmits a control command in a second communication mode which uses a unidirectional wireless communication, a state determination unit which determines a communication mode of the control device, a user interface unit which displays a user interface window which corresponds to a determined communication mode and receives the control command with respect to a broadcast receiver and a control unit which transmits the received control command according to the determined communication mode.

A control device is provided. The control device includes a user interface unit in which information of a broadcast receiver controlled through unidirectional wireless communication is entered, a searching unit which searches an infrared (IR) code set corresponding the broadcast receiver based on the entered information, a managing unit which registers the broadcast receiver as a controllable broadcast receiver within a home network based on the searched IR code set, and a first communication interface unit which, if a control signal for the registered broadcast receiver is received, transmits an IR code corresponding to the control signal from the IR code set corresponding to the registered broadcast receiver to the registered broadcasting receiver.

A display apparatus and a touch sensing method are provided. The display apparatus includes a touch screen which senses a touch by a user using a plurality of sensing types; and a controller which selects a sensing type based on an application. Therefore, a user's touch is sensed using an optimal sensing type for each application. In doing so, malfunction or inconvenience in manipulating the touch screen can be reduced.

A method of controlling a temporary recording based on a variable temporary record interval, and a broadcast receiving device adopting the same, are provided. The broadcast receiving device includes a broadcast receiving unit which receives a broadcast program; a storage unit which temporarily records the broadcast program being received through the broadcast receiving unit; and a control unit which variably determines a temporary record interval with reference to additional information of the broadcast program currently received through the broadcast receiving unit, and controls the storage unit so that a temporary recording is performed during the determined temporary record interval. Accordingly, even if the currently viewed broadcast program has a long running time, the user can view again the previously viewed part of the broadcast program.

A method and apparatus for controlling objects of a user interface (UI) are provided. The method and apparatus simultaneously hide and move a selected object to a bottom of a UI when the object is encrypted, thereby not visually exposing the encrypted object to a third person, displaying, through the UI the encrypted object on a predetermined screen, directory or folder, and rearranging unselected objects to fill a space created when the selected object is hidden and moved.

A method for reproducing contents using information received over a network and a display apparatus using the same are provided. The method for reproducing contents includes receiving specific information over a network, and displaying contents to which an image effect corresponding to the received specific information is applied. As an image effect is applied according to information which is received over a network, a user may visually recognize the received information through the image effect.

A method for providing a graphical user interface (GUI) and a multimedia device using the same, the method including: determining if a user command is input to select a specific section of a GUI item including a plurality of sections; and extending a length of the selected section and reducing lengths of non-selected sections if it is determined that the user command is input to select the specific section of the GUI item. Therefore, the user can manipulate the GUI item more precisely.
