    Abstract: A toggle lever clamp device for automobile body fabrication comprises a clamp housing (1) having a rectangularly shaped cross section wherein the cross-section is taken at a right angle to an axial direction of the housing. The housing is comprised of two parts (12, 13) and has a slot (19) on a rear side thereof that extends in the axial direction. The toggle lever clamp device further includes a cylinder (2) coupled to an end of the housing in the axial direction, a piston (6) axially located in the cylinder so that pressure can be exerted alternately on either side thereof, a piston rod (7) coupled to the piston (6) and extending axially through a part of the cylinder (2) and into a hollow space in the clamp housing (1); and a toggle lever joint arrangement (10) secured to a free end of the piston rod (7). An integral replaceable monitoring cassette (20) forms a cover in the area of a slot (19). The monitoring cassette (20) has a "T" shape including a mounting rail and a flange (25) to which an extending section (21) attaches with its longitudinal axis parallel to a longitudinal axis (18) of the piston rod. The monitoring cassette (20) further comprises a printed circuit board and an adjustable sensor means (22, 23) integrally mounted thereon so that the adjustable sensor means (22, 23) is responsive to the position of the piston rod (7). The monitoring cassette (20) is inserted into the slot (19) while retaining an ability to attach the clamp housing from all four sides, including the rear side, such that the section (21) seals the slot (19) as tightly as possible.

    Abstract: A fluid-operated clamping device comprises a support forming a cylinder in which a piston is reciprocatable. A piston rod fixed to piston has a free end projecting beyond the cylinder. A bell crank is pivotally mounted on a portion of the support extending beyond the cylinder. A clamping arm is preferably releasably connected to one arm of the bell crank and has a V-shaped end portion extending transverse to the remainder of the clamping arm adapted to clamp a sheet metal or the like between the V-shaped end portion and a matching V-shaped notch on the upper surface of a stationary anvil. A link comprising at least one spring plate partly divided by a preferably T-shaped slot extending from one side thereinto into two resilient end portions is arranged between the free end of the piston rod and the other arm of the bell crank with one end portion pivotally connected to the free end of the piston rod and the other end portion pivotally connected to the other arm of the bell crank. The springy link will not only permit construction of the device with relatively large tolerances, but will also prevent excessive clamping forces during operation of the device.

    Abstract: A toggle lever tightening device for use in the automobile industry in the assembly of automobile bodies. Toggle lever tightening devices secure one workpiece relative to a second work piece to locate the pieces for permanent connection. This toggle lever tightening device prevents deformation of the grip head and its seatings. The design of this toggle lever tightening device allows the grip head and cylinder to be constructed of light metal alloys without experiencing damaging deformation of the grip head. A very simple bearing arrangement for this toggle lever tightening device has made possible an embodiment in which a single tightening arm is provided on one side of the grip head. This single tightening arm design is highly desirable in the automobile industry. However, it results in an unfavorable introduction of forces. The pivot shaft that is driven by the toggle lever arrangement and functions to drive the tightening arm is axially and radially seated in the grip head. As a result of this construction, the axial and radial force are transferred to the walls of the grip head dependably and without causing deformation, twisting or sluggishness of the toggle lever arrangement. Bearings in the form of roller bodies are provided that simultaneously function as the axial and radial bearing. This simple bearing arrangement has permitted the use of light metals or light metal alloys for the construction of this mechanism. Major forces are dependably absorbed by an adjustable support plate that is fixed at the top dead center location of the toggle arrangement. The support plate and the fixed stop are made of hardened steel or of a ceramic material, and can be embodied with appropriately large surfaces so that the surface pressure in this area are kept low.
