Abstract: A fixing device adapted to fix a flexible flat piece comprises a support platform adapted to support the flexible flat piece and a fixture adapted to clamp the flexible flat piece onto the support platform. The support platform includes a vacuum chamber formed therein having multiple vacuum suction holes formed in the top wall of the vacuum chamber. The vacuum suction holes are adapted to secure the flexible flat piece on the top surface of the support platform to prevent the flexible flat piece from being moved as it is clamped by the fixture.

Abstract: A method and system temporarily holds a workpiece, most suitably an aero engine turbine blade element during manufacture. The workholding system includes a support body with a contoured body surface, complementary to a workpiece surface, formed of a transparent material to define a bonding zone. The support body is supported by a base to form a workpiece shuttle, and a bond station receives the workpiece shuttle. Complementary zero-point locating elements on the shuttle and station assure accurate positioning. The bond station further has workpiece locating elements configured to accurately position the workpiece on the shuttle in a predetermined position relative to the zero-point locating elements of the shuttle, thereby compensating for shuttle-to-shuttle variance. An adhesive, such as a UV curable adhesive, is applied to the bonding zone and cured by UV through the transparent material, thereby fixing the workpiece in the predetermined position.

Abstract: A mandrel for holding and positioning an intraocular lens blank during manufacturing includes a shank portion having a central axis and a lens blank holding section configured to hold the lens blank. The holding section includes a central cavity formed concentrically with the central axis of the mandrel. Projections are formed on a surface of the central cavity and are configured to support a first surface of the lens blank at a fixed distance from the surface of the central cavity. A ring fits within a peripheral portion of the central cavity to hold a second opposing surface of the lens blank. A method for making an intraocular lens using the mandrel includes filling the space formed under the first surface of the lens with a liquid, such as water, freezing the liquid, and then machining and/or milling the second surface of the lens blank.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a flexible dot matrix bonding apparatus and an adaptive clamping method for a disk-type planar component. The apparatus mainly comprises three components: a substrate, connecting rods and an auxiliary support. The threaded holes in a circumferential array are uniformly distributed in the substrate, and the connecting rods are fixed at different circumferential positions of the substrate in a threaded connection manner, which play a role in bonding and supporting the disk-type planar component. The auxiliary support is matched with the substrate, so that a workpiece after turning can be taken out without damage. According to detection results of machining deformation of the disk-type planar component, the installation positions of the connecting rods on the substrate are adjusted accordingly, thus changing bonding positions of the disk-type planar component. Finally, an adaptive clamping method aiming at reducing the machining deformation of the disk-type planar component is formed.

Abstract: A fixture and a method of operating the fixture are disclosed for repositioning a workpiece disposed on the fixture to correct an offset between the centerline of the workpiece and an indexing position on the fixture. The fixture includes one or more linear actuators that linearly move vacuum grippers on their outboard ends into contact with surfaces of the workpiece. Vacuum is applied to the vacuum grippers, which enables the vacuum grippers to grip the surfaces of the workpiece. The linear actuators are driven to reposition the workpiece on the fixture to reduce the offset between the two below a threshold value. When in position, the fixture secures the workpiece in place for subsequent machining operations that may be performed on the workpiece.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for gripping of a workpiece with a layer jamming structure having rigid datum structures. A system includes a layer jamming structure configurable in an inactivated conformable state, with a membrane defining an internal cavity containing a number of overlapping material layers. The rigid structures engage the layer jamming structure. A pressure system includes a pump coupled with the internal cavity to change a pressure therein to transform the layer jamming structure from the inactivated conformable state to an activated rigid state disposed around the workpiece. The rigid structures help conform the layer jamming structure to the workpiece during transformation to the activated rigid state and to present datum fixturing surfaces in the activated rigid state.

Abstract: A workpiece carriage for workpiece transport includes a guide unit oriented in a longitudinal direction, a drive unit having an electrical supply and a drive motor, and a workpiece gripping unit having two clamping jaws movable relative to one another. A machine tool includes at least one workpiece table, with at least one tool unit movable relative to the workpiece table and with at least two workpiece carriages that are displaceable individually in the longitudinal direction along a machine bed of the machine tool. A manufacturing cell includes such a machine tool and a workpiece supply. The two clamping jaws of the workpiece gripping unit can be displaced relative to one another in a height direction oriented normal to the longitudinal direction and normal to a transverse direction oriented normal to the longitudinal direction. This expands the possible applications of the workpiece carriage.
