摘要： A method for screening of an active voice mail message enables real time monitoring by a subscriber to the voice mail system of incoming calls. Once the identity of the subscriber is established, the subscriber is presented with the option of screening an incoming message. A subscriber desiring to screen the message responds by activating a predetermined key or sequence of keys to enter a listen-only mode for monitoring of the incoming message. The subscriber may then interrupt the message and take the call, continue listening to the incoming message, or terminate listen-only mode and simply permit the message to be stored for later retrieval.

摘要： In one embodiment, a cordless telephone according to the invention includes a base unit, including a paging mechanism, and a handset, including an alerting mechanism responsive to the paging mechanism. At least one of the base unit and the handset includes a page adjusting mechanism to affect an alerting signal output from the alerting mechanism based on a condition. Thus, the paging signal is adaptive to increase the opportunity for a user to determine the location of a misplaced handset. In another embodiment, a cordless telephone is equipped so that the base unit can provide an indication related to a distance between the base unit and the handset. In yet another embodiment, a cordless telephone is equipped so that the paging mechanism is adjusted based on user control. In a further embodiment according to the invention, a method is provided for affecting an alerting signal output by an alerting mechanism of a cordless telephone handset. The method includes the steps of sensing a condition, and affecting the alerting signal based on the sensed condition.

摘要： An Audio Caller ID service is provided which permits the calling party to speak a real time audio message that can be received and played by the called party's Caller ID equipment while his telephone equipment remains in the “on-hook” state. A calling party which has Audio Caller ID (ACID) service would speak a short audio message before dialing the called party. That message is converted to digital form, optionally compressed, and transferred to the called party in a manner similar to conventional Caller ID information. The called party's Caller ID equipment operates in the conventional manner, except that the received Audio Caller ID signal is recognized as an audio signal. At the site of the called party, a decoder is provided to convert the digital signal to an analog audio signal, and this analog signal is provided to a speaker, which plays back the calling party's audio message.

摘要： The present invention relates to an application layer function outside the BLUETOOTH protocol which associates a BLUETOOTH unique address, i.e., the 48-bit unique BD_ADDR address, with a short passcode or PIN which is associated with a particular type of BLUETOOTH device in a particular piconet. The passcode or PIN can be pre-determined by the manufacturer of the BLUETOOTH device, or can be input and defined by the user. Upon installation in a piconet, in one embodiment shown and described with reference to FIGS. 1 and 2, a user can be asked to manually input a particular passcode or PIN into a relevant piconet device, and an inquiry can be broadcast to all communicating piconet devices and only those other piconet devices having a matching passcode or PIN associated therewith can automatically forward their respective 48-bit unique BD_ADDR addresses to the inquiring piconet device. Alternatively, a user can inquire and be provided with a list of available passcodes or PINs already established by other devices in the piconet, and select a particular passcode or PIN associated with one or more other piconet devices. The passcode or personal identification number (PIN) may be input upon electronic device setup (e.g., a four character code). The passcode or PIN may be numeric, text, or alphanumeric.

摘要： A method of transmitting digital data between a base unit and a handset of a cordless telephone includes the step of transmitting a frame including a speech data portion, and a non-speech data portion. In one particular example, the size of the speech data portion and the size of the non-speech data portion are variable. In an alternative embodiment, a cordless telephone includes a base unit, including a codec adapted to convert analog speech data from a far end party to digital samples, a variable encoder adapted to encode the digital samples, and a transceiver adapted to transmit and receive encoded digital samples. The cordless telephone also includes a handset, including a transceiver adapted to transmit and receive encoded digital samples, a controller adapted to act on non-speech data, and a transducer adapted to be responsive to speech data. According to this embodiment, the variable encoder is adapted to encode a speech data portion of a frame based upon a non-speech data portion of the frame. In another alternative embodiment, a frame structure for digital RF communications between a base unit and a handset of a cordless telephone includes a speech data portion, and a non-speech data portion. In one particular example a size of the speech data portion and a size of the non-speech data portion are variable.
