    摘要: Methods for switching a mobile between operation in an mobile satellite system mode and a terrestrial wireless mode. When operating in the terrestrial wireless mode, the mobile terminal will initiate an attempt to switch into the MSS mode when it nears the boundary of the coverage area for a terrestrial wireless system to which it is registered. Conversely, a mobile terminal operating in the MSS mode will regularly attempt to switch into the terrestrial wireless mode. For both, a switch between modes is contingent on the mobile terminal identifying a suitable system for registration therewith upon completing the switch between modes. The criteria for identifying a suitable system for selection purposes include the following: (1) the selected system is available, i.e., the mobile terminal is physically located within a coverage area for the selected system; (2) the mobile terminal is compatible with the selected system; and (3) the selected system is willing to accept the mobile terminal. If multiple systems meet these criteria, the mobile terminal will utilize a stored list of preferred systems to select therefrom. When switching into the terrestrial wireless mode, the MSS system provides the mobile terminal with switch-over information for the underlying terrestrial wireless systems and, when switching into the MSS mode, the terrestrial wireless system provides the mobile terminal with switch-over information for the overlying MSS systems.

The group of one or more delay periods can contain delay periods that increase linearly with the number of collisions, delay periods that increase according to some power of n, where n is the number of collisions, or a delay period that is selected at random based on a predetermined mean backoff delay. Alternatively, the selected backoff time delay is selected from a group of delay periods that increases exponentially with the number of collisions, but with a maximum value set that is less than the maximum set according to conventional backoff algorithms.

    摘要: A satellite communication system provides multicast messaging services to subscriber units. Upon receipt of a multicast communication page from a satellite communication system network, a subscriber unit waits for a random delay period and then responds with an acknowledge signal. Based upon the time of receipt of the acknowledge signal, e.g., within one of a plurality of time periods, the satellite communication system network assigns the subscriber unit to one of a plurality of traffic channels. The satellite communication system infrastructure then sends a multicast communication message to the subscriber unit on the assigned traffic channel. The subscriber unit then waits for a random delay period and then responds with an acknowledge signal. The satellite communication system network then receives the acknowledge signal. Each of a plurality of subscriber units introduces a random delay before transmitting an acknowledge signal so that the satellite communication system network may determine which of the subscriber units received the multicast communication system message.

    摘要: A method of providing an estimation of a mobile station's location in a cellular communication system having a plurality of base stations and mobile stations is disclosed. The mobile station's location is provided by measuring radio propagation parameters between the mobile station and each base station within propagation range of the mobile station. Then, a location probability density function (pdf) is found based on the measured radio propagation parameters. A joint probability density function (pdf) is then constructed by combining each individual function which is obtained. The location of the mobile station is then estimated from the resulting joint probability density function (pdf).

A user may create a representation of a target communication system by using icons representing different network components to build the representation in a user interface. Each of the network components is associated with one or more performance parameters, such as packet delay, packet loss, and jitter for packet-based network components. An overall performance parameter, such as an overall packet delay, overall packet loss, and overall jitter may be derived based on the performance parameters for each of the network components. From the overall performance parameters, the expected or predicted performance of the target communications system may be determined by using an E-model in one arrangement.

    摘要: A method for implementing an activity based resource assignment medium access control (MAC) protocol to allocate resources to subscribers in an interactive, multimedia, broadband satellite communications system. A plurality of channels is provided with at least one of said plurality of channels being assigned to each of a plurality of terminals. Utilization of the channel resources by the plurality of terminals is monitored and an evaluation is conducted of system needs based on the levels of activity and utilization of channel resources by the terminals. Requests for system resources by the terminals are communicated to a resource controller which calculates the system needs. The resource controller is utilized to adjust the channel resources based on the levels of activity and utilization of resources by the terminals. The adjustment provides active terminals as much resources as required during duration of their activity, subject to resource availability.

After a call request is received for establishing a call between at least two network terminals, one or more of a plurality of resource elements are selected in response to the call request based on the bandwidth of the data network. The resource elements, which can include codecs (coders/decoders), packet sizes (for carrying audio data), and others, are used in the requested call between the at least two network terminals. Further, a plurality of communities may be defined each including one or more terminals. One or more usage threshold values may be assigned to a link or links between communities, and a call request is processed based on the one or more usage threshold values. The processing includes at least one of determining whether to admit the call request and selecting resource elements to be used during a call between terminals over the link.
