    Abstract: A particle or pollen sensor comprises an array of relative humidity sensors. A change in relative humidity is representative of a particle or pollen in contact with one or more of the sensors. A size and/or shape of a particle or pollen in contact with one or more of the sensors is optionally also determined based on the number and/or configuration of sensors. From this information, a particle or pollen type is determined.

    Abstract: A particle sensing apparatus is provided for determining particle concentration in a fluid, e.g. air. The apparatus is based on fluid-flow passageway having an upstream inlet to receive the fluid and a downstream outlet to exhaust the fluid. It also includes a recirculation passageway in fluid communication with the fluid-flow passageway. Between them, the fluid-flow passageway and the recirculation passageway define a recirculation loop. A first particle sensor is located in the recirculation loop, and other sensors may also be present at other options. A force applicator is included in the fluid-flow passageway to apply a force to the particles entrained in the fluid. The force is used to direct some or all of the particles into the recirculation loop. This provides a choice between increasing the detection limit or the detection range. A processor determines the concentration of particles in the fluid based on the concentration of particles detected at the first particle sensor.

    Abstract: An apparatus is provided for determining particle characteristics, in which a flow path is generated containing particles to be analyzed. A light detection system detecting light received from a measurement zone which has been scattered by the particles. A time duration for which a particle remains in the measurement zone is measured to determine an effective aerodynamic particle diameter and a peak detected received light intensity is measured to determine an effective optical particle diameter. A further particle parameter is also obtained relating to the shape and/or density of the particle. This approach enables more information than only a particle size to be obtained using a single-stage optical analysis system. The additional information may be used to characterize the particles more accurately.

    Abstract: A filter element (1) for use in a gas purification device (100) is disclosed. It comprises a substrate (10) and a filter layer (20) covering an exterior surface of the substrate (10). The substrate (10) comprises material for containing chemicals (30) effective to remove gas pollutants from a gas. The material of the filter layer (20) is hydrophilic to adsorb liquid solution adsorbents effective in removing gas pollutants from a gas, and the exterior surface of the substrate (10) covered by the filter layer (20) is hydrophobic.
