Abstract: The invention provides a monitoring device for monitoring an air cleaning system for determining when a particle filter of the air cleaning system needs cleaning or replacement. The monitoring device is a remote unit for application to the air cleaning system when a periodic monitoring function is to be performed. It is used to monitor changes in the sound made by the air cleaning system over time to derive information relating to the filter status.

Abstract: In various embodiments, an air quality-monitoring system (100) may include at least one sensor (106) configured to detect operation of a mechanism (110) within or at a boundary of an indoor environment. The mechanism may be external to an air purifier (102) associated with the indoor environment. The system may include a persistent memory (124) for storing data about the indoor environment observed by the at least one sensor (106). A controller (104) may be communicatively coupled with the at least one sensor and configured to: assemble the data into an air quality profile associated with that environment; determine, based on a signal from the at least one sensor and on the air quality profile, a likelihood that operation of the mechanism will cause a measure of air quality within the indoor environment to fail one or more air quality criteria; and selectively provide, based on the likelihood, an indication that operation of the mechanism will cause the measure of air quality within the indoor environment to fail the one or more air quality criteria.

Abstract: An air treatment system (100) is provided that comprises an air purifier (110) arranged to treat a first parameter of ambient air; a controller (130) arranged to control operation of the air purifier (110); and a sensor (120) arranged to detect a value indicative of the first parameter, and to output sensor data indicative of the value to the controller. The controller (130) is arranged to determine whether the sensor (120) and the air purifier (110) are in a same air space by controlling the air purifier (110) to operate in a test mode and analyzing sensor data from the sensor (120) received during the test mode. If the sensor (120) and the air purifier (110) are determined to be in the same air space, the controller (130) is arranged to control the air purifier (110) to operate in a mode based on sensor data from the sensor (120).

Abstract: The present application relates to an apparatus for purifying and/or humidifying air, and a related method for purifying and/or humidifying air. The apparatus comprises a rotary filter (1), a fan (9, 10) for passing air through the rotary filter (1), and a reservoir (4, 5), and wherein the rotation speed of the rotary filter (1) and the settings of the fan (9, 10) depend on the ambient relative humidity and ambient gas pollutant concentration. The apparatus combines the feature of chemisorption with the use of a rotary filter (1), thereby providing an apparatus which is able to purify air and/or regulate the ambient humidity based on humidity levels and levels of a target gas pollutant in the air. The invention removes the need for a pump for liquid transport, removes the need for frequent and expensive filter changes by the user, and instead only requires the user to periodically refresh the filtration solution in the reservoir (4, 5).

Abstract: The invention provides a sensor device which comprises an input flow channel (10) for receiving a gas flow with entrained matter to be sensed. A thermophoretic arrangement (14a, 14b) is used to induce a thermophoretic particle movement from a first, warmer, region (16) of the input flow channel to a second, cooler, region (18) of the input flow channel (10). A sensor (24) comprises a particle sensor component at or downstream of the first region (16) of the input flow channel (10). The invention provides the benefit of pre-filtering (e.g. removal of most suspended solids/liquids) without the need for a physical filter that can become blocked.

Abstract: The invention proposes a method and device for sensing a liquid that contains positively charged particles and/or negatively charged particles. An electrical field is imposed to the liquid by applying a voltage to a positive electrode and a negative electrode disposed in the liquid, for attracting the negatively charged particles toward the positive electrode to concentrate the negatively charged particles in a first part of the liquid and attracting the positively charged particles toward the negative electrode to concentrate the positively charged particles in a second part of the liquid. A first sensing result is obtained by sensing at least one part of liquid of the first part of the liquid, the second part of the liquid, and a third part of the liquid in which the negatively charged particles and the positively charged particles are deconcentrated. Accordingly, the sensing is conducted in at least one part of liquid in which the concentration of the charged particles is changed. Since the concentration of the particles in the liquid impacts the sensitivity of the sensing of the liquid, it is possible to improve the sensitivity.

Abstract: A particle sensing apparatus is provided for determining particle concentration in a fluid, e.g. air. The apparatus is based on fluid-flow passageway having an upstream inlet to receive the fluid and a downstream outlet to exhaust the fluid. It also includes a recirculation passageway in fluid communication with the fluid-flow passageway. Between them, the fluid-flow passageway and the recirculation passageway define a recirculation loop. A first particle sensor is located in the recirculation loop, and other sensors may also be present at other options. A force applicator is included in the fluid-flow passageway to apply a force to the particles entrained in the fluid. The force is used to direct some or all of the particles into the recirculation loop. This provides a choice between increasing the detection limit or the detection range. A processor determines the concentration of particles in the fluid based on the concentration of particles detected at the first particle sensor.
