A cutting insert for chip forming machining of metal workpieces, especially for milling, has an upper face, a lower face and edge faces intersecting the upper face to form cutting edges. A chip upsetting face extends inwardly from the cutting edge and a concavely curved chip face extends inwardly from the chip upsetting face to form a transition edge therewith. The upper face is provided with a number of depressions which are spaced apart along the transition edge. The depressions intersect the transition edge and extend inwardly therefrom. The depression extend non-perpendicularly relative to the cutting edge to form an acute angle with a line perpendicular to the cutting edge. The acute angle is in the range of 5 to 45 degrees. During a cutting action in the depressions cause runners to be formed on the chip bottom, and the runners tend to climb up the sides of the depressions.

Each cutting insert has an octagonal basic shape and includes eight cutting edges created by the intersection between an upper face and an edge face of the insert. The fasteners bear frictionally against the upper faces of respective inserts. The upper face comprises a number of safety stop projections. In the event that the insert slips relative to the fastener during a milling operation, one of the safety stop projections abuts the fastener to prevent accidental dislodgement of the insert.

The cutting head includes a rear mounting portion and the retention element includes a front retaining portion. The mounting and retaining portion present forwardly facing and rearwardly facing surfaces, respectively, which engage one another for retaining the cutting head in the shank. The hook of the cutting head is asymmetrical with respect to the axis and is larger than the hook of the retention element. The cutting head includes a central flushing channel for conducting a flushing medium. The channel extends through the mounting portion of the cutting head for reducing the mass of that hook. The retention element includes a central channel which does not extend through the retaining portion.
