摘要: An oblique angle deposition is used to provide an A-plate optical retarder having at least one dense, form-birefringent layer. According to one embodiment, the dense, form-birefringent layer(s) are deposited as part of an FBAR stack to provide an all-dielectric full-function A/−C-plate trim retarder for LCD birefringence compensation. Advantageously, the dense structure of the full-function A/−C-plate trim retarder offers high durability and/or stability, thus making it well suited for providing polarization compensation in high light flux polarization-based projection systems.

摘要: A grating trim retarder fabricated from a form-birefringent multi-layer dielectric stack including at least one anti-reflection coating and supported on a transparent substrate is provided. The form-birefringent dielectric stack includes an axially-inhomogeneous element in the form of a −C-plate grating and a transversely-inhomogeneous element in the form of an A-plate grating. Each of the −C-plate and the A-plate gratings are fabricated with dimensions to form a zeroth order sub-wavelength grating structure. Fabricating the grating trim retarder with anti-reflection coatings and/or a segment where the −C-plate and A-plate grating overlap enables the in-plane and out-of-plane retardances to be tailored independently according to the desired application.

摘要: Thin-film coatings, which for example have alternating layers of high and low refractive index materials, are shown to function as both positive and negative C-plates, in dependence upon the incident radiation. In particular, the shape of the retardance versus angle of incidence profile is found to be determined, at least in part, by the phase thickness of the thin film coating (i.e., the optical thickness in terms of the wavelength of the incident radiation, which may, for example, be expressed in degrees, radians, or as the number of quarter wavelengths). These thin film coatings are optionally integrated into anti-reflection coatings, thin film interference filters and/or other components to improve efficiency and/or functionality.

摘要: Generally, the present disclosure describes a compact optical integrator that provides an increased path length for a beam of light in a compact projection system. The increased path length can improve the uniformity of the light passing through the compact projection system, with a minimal increase in the size of the system. The light can be homogenized by mixing light entering the integrator from different regions of the input area. The compact optical integrator can be positioned in the optical path between a light source and a spatial light modulator, such as a liquid crystal display (LCD) or a digital micro-mirror (DMM) array.

摘要: Optical elements, color combiners using the optical elements, and image projectors using the color combiners are described. The optical elements can be configured as color combiners that receive different wavelength spectrums of light and produce a combined light output that includes the different wavelength spectrums of light. In one aspect, the received light inputs are unpolarized, and the combined light output is polarized in a desired state. In one aspect, the received light inputs are unpolarized, and the combined light output is also unpolarized. The optical elements are configured to minimize the passage of light which may be damaging to wave-length-sensitive components in the light combiner. Image projectors using the color combiners can include imaging modules that operate by reflecting or transmitting polarized light.

摘要: An apparatus is described for controlling the optical path length in an optical device, e.g. an interferometer, and more importantly to maintaining the optical path length difference in an interferometer. The apparatus may include an adjustable plate optically coupled with a beamsplitter. The plate may be rotated such that its surface receives light propagated from the beamsplitter at a non-zero incident angle. In one embodiment, temperature sensitivity is addressed by ensuring that the refractive index of the plate is greater than the refractive index of the beamsplitter. In another embodiment, the apparatus includes combination spacers having a component selected in dependence upon a composition, thickness, and orientation of the adjustable plate.

摘要: A method and apparatus for reducing speckle in a laser illumination system uses a despeckle device including an optical retarder providing an odd integer multiple of substantially half-wave retardation for light emitted from a coherent laser in the laser illumination system. The near half-wave optical retarder has a substantially constant retardance and a spatially varied slow axis. The spatially varied slow axis imposes a phase mask on the beam of light, which provides sub-resolution optical phase modulation to a resolution spot on the detector. The near half-wave optical retarder is actuated mechanically or electrically to vary the sub-resolution optical phase modulation within an integration time of the detector.
