A magnetic recording medium containing a support having provided thereon a lower layer containing a nonmagnetic powder and a binder and further provided thereon at least one magnetic layer containing a ferromagnetic powder and a binder. The lower layer can contain as a binder at least a monomer unit containing from 5 to 45% by weight of a (meth)acrylate unit containing a benzene ring and from 1 to 45% by weight of a radical polymerizable monomer unit containing a nitrogen atom, with these units making a total amount of 100% by weight. It can also contain an acrylic resin having a hydrophilic polar group. The magnetic recording medium may also contain a support having provided thereon at least one magnetic layer containing a ferromagnetic powder and a binder each in the dispersed state. The magnetic layer can contain at least a monomer unit comprising from 15 to 75% by weight of an alkyl (meth)acrylate as a binder and from 1 to 45% by weight of a radical polymerizable monomer unit containing nitrogen, with these units making a total amount of 100% by weight. It can also contain an acrylic resin having a hydrophilic polar group used in combination with a resin (A) defined herein; a resin (B) defined herein; or a resin (C) defined herein.

The magnetic recording medium of the invention comprises a substrate and a magnetic layer stacked thereon and composed of a dispersion of a ferromagnetic powder in a binder, and is characterized in that the binder contains a polyurethane resin 1 obtained by polymerization of a diol compound having a cyclic structure and a long-chain form of alkyl chain with a diisocyanate compound. Preferably, the polyurethane resin contains as diol components a dimer diol and an aliphatic diol having a medium-chain form of alkyl branched chain. The polyurethane resin may comprise a polyether polyol having a cyclic structure. A poor solvent is used for removing low molecular weight components from a binder, which has weight average molecular weight within the range of 10,000 to 60,000, said poor solvent has a solubility parameter being different from solubility parameter of the binder by more than 1.3 and less than 2.3 and is a solvent such as acetonitrile having no active hydrogen, and a difference between solubility parameter of the solvent in the solution after mixing and solubility parameter of the binder is more than 1.0 and less than 2.0, said poor solvent is used for fractional precipitation, and the poor solvent being by 0.5 to 3 times as much as the quantity of the binder solution is added to separate the solution to a liquid phase where low molecular weight components are dissolved more and a liquid layer where high molecular weight components are dissolved more and the latter is taken up, or an ultrafiltration membrane is used to remove low molecular weight components, content of the low molecular weight components having molecular weight of not more than 5,000 are reduced to not more than 3 weight % of total weight of the binder, and said binder is used for formation of a magnetic layer and a lower coating layer of a magnetic recording medium.
