For machining male or female screws, especially of considerably large size diameter, variable pitch or tapered, as desired, a machining center is used which is composed of a work table mounting the work fixedly thereon, and a rotatable machining spindle exchangeably fitted with a thread-cutting tool. Axial feed and rotational speed of the spindle are driven by respective drive motors. In addition, the work table is fed bilaterally on a plane perpendicular to the axis of the spindle by respective feed motors. All these four motors are controlled synchronously by respective controllers which are subjected to control by a single parent numerical controller.

A scale section is made of a magnetic material. A repeated pattern is recorded at a uniform pitch on the surface of the scale section. A sensor section is provided independently from the scale section. The sensor section is provided with a magnetic position sensor that reads the pattern, on a surface close to the surface of the scale section. Further, the sensor section is provided with a magnetic tilt sensor that detects a tilt between the surface of the scale section and the surface of the sensor section on which the position sensor is located. The magnetic position detector in which the scale section and the sensor section are separated from each other can be efficiently fixed to a detection target using the tilt sensor.

An electromagnetic induction type position sensor comprises an AC magnetic flux generating device which generates AC magnetic flux substantially at a wavelength λ, and a plurality of coils which receives the AC magnetic flux to output electromagnetic induction voltages. Each coil includes a plurality of sinusoidal conductive patterns at a wavelength λ formed in each of an even number of layers laminated via insulating materials. The plurality of conductive patterns formed in a same layer is arranged with a space between them in an amplitude direction of the sinusoidal shape, and is formed at the same position as a plurality of conductive patterns formed in another adjacent layer, and its amplitude is in a reverse phase to that of the plurality of conductive patterns formed in the other adjacent layer. All the conductive patterns constituting the same coil are connected in series so that a direction of an electric current of these conductive patterns is opposite to that of the conductive patterns in reverse phases when viewed from the front of the layers.

To improve the flexibility in changing a transfer procedure and the efficiency in transferring data when a plurality of sensors transmit detected data to a detected data receiver. The detected data receiver transmits detected data transfer request command RS simultaneously to a plurality of sensors. A detected data transfer request command RS contains information regarding a network using order, to thereby inform respective sensors of a data transferring order. A sensor which has been requested to carry out data transferring by the command RS detects the completion of data transferring by a sensor which has been requested to carry out data transferring immediately preceding the sensor concerned, and then initiates its own data transferring. With this arrangement, a transfer procedure can be flexibly changed by using a request command RS, and useless intervals between data transfers by respective sensors are omitted.

Resolvers are provided, each having a stator and a rotor. The stator includes pole teeth made of a magnetic material and arranged along an outer circumference of the rotating shaft at a distance from the rotating shaft. The rotor includes a rotor made of a magnetic material respectively associated with pole teeth and located between the rotating shaft and pole teeth. Second gearing operatively couples the rotor of the resolvers to the rotatable shaft. Upon a rotation of the rotating shaft, the first gearing causes the rotatable shaft to rotate, and upon a rotation of the rotatable shaft, the second gearing (14 and 15) causes the rotor of each of the resolvers, at incrementally different gear ratios, to vary reluctance of a magnetic circuit formed by the pole teeth of an associated stator portion.

Two position sensors provide, as outputs, two signals that vary sinusoidally at a pitch of wavelength λ with respect to a displacement of a target and have phases shifted from each other by 90°. A memory unit has stored therein offset values for the two signals, and two subtractors eliminate the offset values from the two signals, respectively. The two signals after offset elimination are converted into position data in an interpolation calculator. A radius calculator calculates a radius value of the two signals after offset elimination. An FFT calculates offset values based on the position data and the radius values, and the calculated offset values are used to update the values stored in the memory unit. An amplitude ratio correction value and a phase difference correction value for the two signals are updated similarly. By performing elimination of the components that degrade interpolation accuracy at every rotational position, interpolation accuracy is improved.

A compensator provided within the binarization processor functions to correct and determine the value of a read target bit based on an output signal from a read sensor which is the sensor located closest to the center of the one-bit width of the read target bit, and an output signal from a compensation sensor, which is a sensor separated from the read sensor by a distance within the range from λ/2 to 3·λ/2.

Multiple output signals of rotary displacement sensors of a machine tool spindle are processed by a multi-displacement detector to detect a displacement which is different from a radial displacement in a moving direction. This results in a reduced number of displacement sensors. The multi-displacement detector includes: a moving section whose surface is continuously irregular in the moving direction; a stationary section including a plurality of sensors each outputting a signal that contains an output component whose level is proportional to a sine-wave value of a displacement in the moving direction and has an amplitude modulated in proportion to a variation in the gap from the irregular surface; and an arithmetic logic device for receiving the output signals of the plurality of sensors and for outputting signals indicative of a displacement in the moving direction and another at least one displacement of the moving section.
