摘要: An improved and simplified outboard motor construction wherein the cooling and exhaust systems for the engine are formed with a minimum number of components and sealing joints and incorporating a non-metallic cam shaft for reduced cost and weight without sacrifice of durability. The exhaust system includes an elongated expansion chamber formed in the drive shaft housing. In addition, the drive shaft housing has a cylindrical section that is journaled within a swivel bracket for its steering movement. The volume between the external portion of the drive shaft housing and the internal portion of the swivel bracket forms a second expansion chamber that is employed for the low speed above the water exhaust gas discharge. The flow of cooling the water to and from the engine is controlled so that the exhaust gas interchange area between the power head and the drive shaft housing will be well cooled, as will the oil reservoir for the engine and the oil returned to it.

摘要: An outboard motor includes an improved engine layout to provide a compact power head while simplifying the arrangement of components on the engine. In one mode, an induction system of the engine includes a carburetor that is arranged over a cylinder head. An intake pipe connects the carburetor to an intake port of the cylinder head. The pipe has generally a U-shape and loops around the upper side edge of the cylinder head. An air intake device is arranged upstream of the carburetor to supply air thereto. The air intake device includes a downward facing air intake opening that is located along a side of the engine below the upper end. This arrangement of the induction system that extends over the upper side of the engine produces a compact assembly without overly complicating the arrangement of other components on the engine, such as, for example, a manual starter device. With the present engine layout, the manual starter device is positioned on an upper side of the engine in front of the carburetor near a crankshaft of the engine. The air intake opening faces a lower air vent formed in a cowling below the engine. Cool air flows through the lower air vent and is drawn into the air intake opening for engine operation. This flow of cool air also cools the engine. The cowling also includes an upper vent to expel warm air from about the carburetor on the upper side of the cowling and to promote a current of air across the engine for cooling purposes.

摘要: The present invention is an improved oil reservoir for an outboard motor. The oil reservoir is defined by an oil pan portion of an exhaust guide. The exhaust guide includes a support portion which is positioned below an engine powering the motor. The oil pan portion extends downwardly from the support portion. An opening provided in the support portion of the exhaust guide leads to the oil reservoir, serving as an oil return. Preferably, a gasket positioned between the exhaust guide and the engine partially obscures the opening, preventing backflow of oil from the reservoir into the engine when the motor is titled.

摘要: An outboard motor includes an engine including a vertically extending crankshaft, a rope reel, a transmitting member, a force accumulation spiral spring, and an engine cover arranged to cover these components. The rope reel includes a plate portion arranged to be rotatable about the rotational center axis of the crankshaft and a rope winding portion provided integrally with the plate portion at the peripheral edge thereof and arranged to be wound with a rope to start the engine. The transmitting member is arranged to be rotatable about the rotational center axis of the crankshaft and to transmit rotation to the crankshaft. The force accumulation spiral spring is disposed on the opposite side of the engine with respect to the plate portion of the rope reel. The force accumulation spiral spring is arranged to accumulate a torque applied to the rope reel and transmit the torque to the transmitting member, first and second ends of the spring being fixed, respectively, to the rope reel and the transmitting member.

摘要: A power head for an outboard motor includes an improved construction that can includes a compactly arranged tilt relay unit of a hydraulic tilt and trim system. The outboard motor includes a drive unit comprising an internal combustion engine. A bracket assembly is adapted to be mounted on an associated watercraft. The bracket supports the drive unit for pivotal movement about a generally horizontally extending tilt axis. A hydraulic tilt system is arranged to tilt up and down the drive unit. The tilt system includes a hydraulic pump and an electric motor actuating the hydraulic pump. A tilt relay unit supplies electric power to the electric motor based upon a control signal. The relay unit is disposed generally between the engine and the bracket assembly.
