Stabilization treatment of acicular ferromagnetic iron or iron-alloy fine particles against the oxidation thereof comprises the steps of (a) suspending acicular ferromagnetic iron or iron-alloy particles obtained by the reduction of acicular iron oxide which may contain Co or Ni in an aqueous alkaline solution having 0.01 to 18-N of hydroxyl ion concentration at a temperature of 5.degree. to 70.degree. C. while stirring the suspension in a non-oxidative atmosphere therethrough and thereby controlling the dissolution of ferrous ion from the surface of the acicular particles therein, (b) oxidizing the surface of the acicular particles in the resultant suspension by introducing an oxygen containing gas therein at a temperature of 60.degree. to 100.degree. C. to form dense and thin magnetite film on the surface of the acicular particles; and (c) drying the resultant particles in air at a temperature below 100.degree. C.

Disclosed is a gas generant composition for a gas actuator used for activating a safety device, which contains (A) a nitrogen-containing organic compound, (B) a metal nitrate and/or a perchlorate, (C) a water-soluble polymer binder, and (D) a magnetic material. When compared with the conventional gas generant compositions, this gas generant composition is excellent in combustibility under low pressure conditions and reduced in CO gas generation during combustion. In this gas generant composition, (D) the magnetic material is preferably composed of a magnetic iron oxide. It is also preferable that (A) the nitrogen-containing organic compound is composed of one or more substances selected from nitroguanidine, guanidine nitrate, bitetrazole, azobistetrazole and 5-aminotetrazole; (B) the metal nitrate is composed of a metal salt selected from alkali metals and alkaline earth metals, while the perchlorate is composed of ammonium perchlorate or potassium perchlorate; (C) the water-soluble polymer binder is composed of a mixture of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and a polyacrylamide; and (D) the magnetic iron oxide has a spinel crystal structure.

There are provided a pharmaceutical raw material capable of exhibiting a uniform functionality and producing magnetic particle-containing drugs for diagnosis and medical treatments with a high reproducibility. The pharmaceutical raw material comprises a monodisperse colloid sterile aqueous solution of magnetic iron oxide fine particles having an average particle diameter of 5 to 30 nm, a saturation magnetization of 50 to 90 Am2/kg and a coercive force of 0.1 to 1.6 kA/m. The pharmaceutical raw material can be produced by forming magnetic iron oxide fine particles in the form of a colloid aqueous solution, purifying the resultant colloid aqueous solution of superparamagnetic iron oxide particles by water-washing and removing water-soluble salts by-produced upon the reaction from the reaction solution by an ordinary method, and replacing a dispersing medium of the purified colloid aqueous solution with ultrapure water.

The magneto rheological fluid of the present invention comprises magnetic particles, a dispersing medium and polyethyleneoxide as a viscosity modifier, the polyethyleneoxide being contained in an amount of 0.5 to 5% by weight based on the weight of the magnetic particles. The magneto rheological fluid of the present invention can exhibit an excellent dispersion stability, and, more specifically, can exhibit an excellent dispersion stability and can be prevented from suffering from sedimentation of magnetic particles contained therein.

A heat-resistant inorganic pigment of the present invention comprises a composite metal oxide containing Ti and two divalent metals selected from the group consisting of Mg, Fe, Ni and Co, the content of said two divalent metals in said composite metal oxide being 0.95 to 1.05, in an atomic ratio, based on Ti, and the composition ratio of said two divalent metals being 95/5 to 5/95 in an atomic ratio. The pigment of the present invention is useful as a pigment for a heat-resistant coating material and is a novel heat-resistant inorganic pigment which does not pollute the environment.
