Abstract: Armouring tape (102) for wrapping around a hose (300) during its fabrication by a hose-wrapping machine (200; 400). The tape (102) is coiled into a roll (100) having a hollow core (109) from which the tape (102) is unwound to be wrapped onto the hose (300). The hose-wrapping machine (200; 400) rotatably mounts the roll (100) with the hose (300) passing through the roll core (109), the roll axis (108) being skewed to the hose axis (304) by the helix angle at which the tape (102) is to be wrapped onto and along the hose (300). The hose (300) is moved longitudinally through the longitudinally static roll (100) and at the same time, the roll (100) is rotated around the longitudinal axis (304) of the non-rotating hose (300). The armouring tape (102) unwinds from the inside (109) of the roll onto and along the hose (300) so as to wrap the hose (300) with a uniform helix of armouring tape (102). The use of a tape (102) containing an elastomer-embedded array of armouring cables (104) enables armouring wires and elastomer layers to be applied without a stabilising layer of fabric, and greatly simplifies setting-up of machinery for hose fabrication. The use of a tape roll (100) which can be unwound from its inside (109) enables hoses to be wrapped without having to orbit rolls that are very large and heavy.

Abstract: A hose or flexible pipe (100,200) which has an inner lining (116; 216) composed of fluoropolymer. This gives the hose an improved capacity to withstand high temperatures, chemical degradation and embrittlement along with flexibility and light weight. The hose wall structure (102) is preferably fully bonded to improve support for the fluoropolymer lining (116; 216). Abstract: The invention relates to flexible pipes for transporting cryogenic gas in liquefied form. The pipe is of composite form and comprises an inner pipe adapted to withstand pressure loads and cryogenic temperatures, an outer pipe adapted to withstand tensile axial forces, and a layer of insulating material (34) interposed between the inner and outer pipes. The inner pipe is defined by a hollow carcass (10) formed from a helical interlocked metallic strip (12), the internal and external surfaces of which are lined with a fluid-pressure containment sheath (32) of fully fluorinated fluoroplastic. The insulating layer (34) acts to maintain a temperature differential between the respective pipes. Adjacent portions of the strip (12) in the carcass (10) are moveable relative to each other to provide flexibility to the pipe along its length.

Abstract: Where a submarine wellhead is coupled to a floating vessel by a riser in the form of a flexible hose, vessel movements subject the riser to excessive strains where the riser is tethered ask to the vessel. In accordance with the invention, these strains are reduced by pivoting the riser tether about a horizontal axis, and optionally also about a vertical axis. Giving the riser tether at least one degree of rotational freedom is surprisingly beneficial in reducing riser strains, and consequently in reducing the probability of premature failure of the riser.
