A liquid crystal composition includes a liquid crystal containing at least one mesomorphic compound having a cholesteric phase (Ch phase)-free mesomorphic phase, and at least one compound (e) having a limit of solubility in the liquid crystal and being contained in the composition in a proportion ranging from 20% of the limit of solubility to below the limit of solubility. The liquid crystal composition may preferably include the liquid crystal containing at least one fluorine-containing mesomorphic compound (a) having a fluorocarbon terminal portion and a hydrocarbon terminal portion, and at least one achiral compound (b), a the compound (e), having a specific ring structure and a specific terminal alkyl group free from a perfluorocarbon atom. The compound having a Ch phase-free mesomorphic phase, preferably the compound (a), and the compound (e), preferably the compound (b) are effective in providing the liquid crystal composition with a layer structure of so-called bookshelf or a layer structure having a small inclination angle (closer to bookshelf structure). The liquid crystal composition is useful in improving response characteristics and display characteristics, particularly a contrast ratio, of a liquid crystal device using the liquid crystal composition.

A liquid crystal device is constituted by a pair of oppositely disposed substrates including a first substrate provided with a first alignment control layer which has been subjected to a uniaxial aligning treatment and a second substrate provided with a second alignment control layer which has not been subjected to a uniaxial aligning treatment, a sealing member disposed so as to seal up a peripheral portion of the first and second substrates to form a spacing therebetween, and a dispersion member (e.g., spacer beads or adhesive particles) and a liquid crystal disposed in the spacing while contacting the first and second aligning control layers. The dispersion member has been subjected to a surface treatment with a material constituting the second alignment control layer. The surface-treated dispersion member is effective in suppressing an occurrence of a reverse domain within a display region of the liquid crystal device, thus preventing flickering and improving a contrast.

At least one of the alignment control layers has a thickness of at most 200 .ANG. or comprises polyimide. The liquid crystal composition comprises at least one species of a fluorine-containing mesomorphic compound in an amount of at least 70 wt. % comprising a fluorocarbon terminal portion and a hydrocarbon terminal portion, the terminal portions being connected with a central core, and having smectic mesophase or latent smectic mesophase, and comprises at least one species of a resistivity-modifying substance. The fluorine-containing mesomorphic compound comprises a compound having a fluorocarbon terminal portion containing at least one catenary ether oxygen atom in an amount of at least 30 wt. % based on the liquid crystal composition. The liquid crystal device is effective in improving switching characteristics, an alignment characteristic and display performances while retaining a bookshelf structure or a near bookshelf structure with respect to a smectic layer structure.

In the liquid crystal device including the polyimide alignment control film, the chiral smectic liquid crystal at least has a voltage-transmittance characteristic such that an effective tilt angle and a transmittance continuously change depending on an electric field applied thereto.
