Provided is a method of producing a film including: a coating step of coating, on a substrate, a polymerizable liquid crystal composition containing a polymerizable liquid crystal compound, an alignment controlling agent capable of controlling alignment of the polymerizable liquid crystal compound, a polymerization initiator and coated film a solvent; and a drying step of drying, wherein the alignment controlling agent is a compound represented by formula (1) below, and the alignment controlling agent is added in 0.005 to 0.2 parts by mass relative to 100 parts by mass of the polymerizable liquid crystal compound: In general formula (1), each of L1 and L2 represents an alkylene group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms that may be substituted with a fluorine atom or the like, and n1 and n2 represents integers of 3 or more.

Example embodiments disclosed herein relate to the stabilization of the orthoconic state in orthoconic antiferroelectric liquid crystal devices. According to some of the example embodiments, the stabilization may be obtained by tuning a device cell as well as material parameters. The orthoconic state may be stabilized by means of the cell surfaces, electric fields, and/or polymer-stabilization, and combinations thereof, under selected conditions. The example embodiments presented herein advances several new working modes as well as new types of applications of orthoconic antiferroelectric liquid crystals.

A liquid crystal composition includes at least one fluorine-containing mesomorphic compound (a) having a fluorocarbon terminal portion and a hydrocarbon terminal portion, and at least one optically active compound (b) having an optically active cyclic group and a terminal alkyl group free from a perfluorocarbon atom. The compound (a) and the compound (b) are mutually soluble readily to form a homogeneous liquid crystal composition. The liquid crystal composition shows a layer structure of so-called bookshelf or a layer structure having a small inclination angle (closer to bookshelf structure). The liquid crystal composition is useful in improving response characteristics and display characteristics, particularly a contrast ratio, of a liquid crystal device using the liquid crystal composition.
