There is disclosed a pad for use in an air bag device enclosing an air bag which inflates in case of an accident. The device is mounted to mount members disposed around the bag. The pad is shaped like a box, and comprises an upper wall and side walls extending downward from the fringes of the upper wall. The pad is molded integrally with an insert on which a coat layer is formed out of a soft synthetic resin. The coat layer has a thin-walled portion that breaks when the air bag inflates. The thin-walled portion is disposed at a given position on the upper wall. The insert comprises a rectangular tubular base portion made from a synthetic resin and a plurality of flexible nets disposed on opposite sides of the thin-walled portion. The base portion is disposed inside the side walls. The nets are disposed on the upper wall and connected to the top of the base portion. An attachment portion for mounting the pad to the mount members and setting portions for setting the pad in a mold used to mold the coat layer are formed on the base portions.

A cover for an inflatable air bag is provided which has an upper portion adapted to break upon inflation of the air bag and a side portion which extends downwardly from the peripheral edge of the upper portion. An insert is embedded in the cover and includes a flexible net and a flexiblle reinforcing band assembly. The net includes a side portion embedded in the side portion of the cover and upper portions which are embedded in upper portions of the cover. Coupling portions vertically couple the side portion of the net to the upper portions thereof. The reinforcing band assembly includes a horizontal band which is coupled by for example sewing to the side portion of the net along the entire perimeter of the side portion of the net and vertical bands which are sewn to the horizontal band and to the side edges of the upper portion and/or the coupling portions of the net. The vertical bands of the reinforcing band assembly are bent back at their lower ends so that the lower portions surround the horizontal band are are connected thereto. Since the vertical bands are wrapped around and sewn to the horizontal band, forces which act on the vertical bands when the air bag is inflated are distributed to the horizontal band so that the strength of the cover is great enough to withstand tensile forces which act on the coupling portions of the net.

An air bag system for a navigator's or passenger's seat includes a casing with an opening arranged in an instrument panel below an inclined windshield. An air bag, having a gas inlet port and accommodated in a folded shape in the casing, is held at the peripheral edge of the gas inlet port by the casing. When inflated, the air bag will extend a great distance toward the passenger's seat and will also interfere with the windshield. The inflator is arranged in the casing for feeding the gases to the gas inlet port of the air bag which is offset from the center of one of the base cloths, and the opening of the casing is covered but opens upon inflation. The air bag is shaped by sewing the peripheral edges of two circular base cloths.
