The liquid crystal display comprises: a lower substrate having a plurality of gate bus lines disposed parallel to each other, a plurality of data bus lines disposed perpendicular to the gate bus lines and defining matrix type sub pixels together with the gate bus lines, a thin film transistor provided adjacent to an intersection of the gate bus line and the data bus line, and a pixel electrode connected to the thin film transistor and disposed within the sub pixel; an upper substrate opposed to the lower substrate with a selected distance and having a counter electrode, the counter electrode formed at a portion corresponding to the sub pixel and forming an electric field together with the pixel electrode; a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between and having a plurality of liquid crystal molecules; a first homeotropic alignment layer and a second homeotropic alignment layer formed at inner face of the lower substrate and at inner face of the upper substrate respectively; and a first polarizing plate and a second polarizing plate attached at outer face of the lower substrate and at outer face of the upper substrate respectively, wherein the electric field formed between the counter electrode and the pixel electrode is formed as an oblique line with respect to the lower substrate surface, and is formed as a diagonal line having a symmetry with respect to the data bus line and the gate bus line.

The present invention is directed to provide a liquid crystal display having an improved picture quality, high transmittance and high aperture ratio. The liquid crystal display comprises: an upper and a lower substrate opposed each other to be spaced apart; a liquid crystal layer interposed between inner surfaces of the upper and lower substrates, the liquid crystal layer including a plurality of liquid crystal molecules; a gate bus line and a data bus line formed in the lower substrate in a matrix configuration and defining sub-pixel regions; a counter electrode formed on each sub-pixel region of the lower substrate; a pixel electrode formed on each sub-pixel region of the lower substrate, wherein the counter electrode and the pixel electrode form an electric field; a thin film transistor formed at an intersection of the gate bus line and the data bus line, and switching a signal transmitted from the data bus line into the pixel electrode when the gate bus line is selected; and a homogeneous alignment layer formed on inner surfaces of the upper and lower substrates, wherein a first electric field is formed between the counter and pixel electrodes of a selected sub-pixel among the sub-pixel regions, and the electric field is formed as a diagonal line with respect to the gate bus line and the data bus line, wherein a second electric field is formed between the counter electrode and the pixel electrode of another sub-pixel adjacent to said selected sub-pixel, and the second electric field is formed as a diagonal line to make a symmetry with the first electric field.

The disclosed fringe field switching mode LCD includes counter electrodes and pixel electrodes arranged on a back substrate to produce a fringe field having horizontal elements parallel to data bus lines at one unit pixel while producing a fringe field having horizontal elements parallel to gate bus lines at each of unit pixels longitudinally and laterally adjacent to the one unit pixel. In this LCD, the rubbing axis of a back horizontal alignment film defines an angle of ±45±10° with respect to each of the gate bus lines.

The present invention relates to a method for forming post spacers in a liquid crystal display, which enables cell gap to be uniform by means of a half-tone mask. The method comprises the steps of: defining a active region and a dummy region in a substrate; forming a black matrix on the substrate at the outside of the active region; selectively forming a RGB resin film on the active region while selectively forming a RGB resin film on the dummy region; forming a protective film on the resulting structure; forming a photosensitive resin film on the protective film; forming a half-tone mask pattern on the photosensitive resin film; and selectively etching the photosensitive resin film using the half-tone mask pattern so as to form the post spacers having a different height.
