    摘要: A polarization conversion optical system converts light having a nonuniform plane of polarization into light having a uniform plane of polarization. The system includes a multilayer dielectric film at the side upon which the target light is incident. The film exhibits the property that it reflects one polarized component of the light and transmits a second polarized component of the light at a first angle of incidence, but transmits the first component at a second angle of incidence. Incident target light that is transmitted through the film at the first angle of incidence passes through a quarter-wavelength plate and is reflected at the second angle, whereupon it is retransmitted through the quarter-wavelength plate to be converted from one plane of polarization to the other. It is then emitted from the dielectric film in the same plane of polarization as light reflected by the film.

    摘要: A diffractive optical element has a diffraction grating formed by periodic depressions and projections on the surface of a substrate and a dielectric multilayer film on the diffraction grating. The materials of the respective layers of the film are chosen such that the depth of the depressions is an integral multiple of the sum of the thickness of the layers in one period of the film. As a result, individual layers of the film are continuous across multiple depressions and projections, to provide improved first-order reflectance.

    摘要: An optical module has a substrate, a waveguide, formed on the substrate, for guiding light, and a photonic crystal portion that has media having different refractive indices arranged in a periodic pattern and that is disposed in a channel of the waveguide on the substrate. Here, the photonic crystal and the substrate are integrally formed. The formation comprises the steps of forming an aluminum film on the top of a conductive substrate, forming a protective film on the aluminum film, removing the protective film from a predetermined area to form a window over the predetermined area, anodizing the aluminum film exposed through the window to form photonic crystals, removing the protective film, cladding the bottom of the substrate and forming a core layer over the cladded bottom.

    摘要: An organic light-emitting element including an organic light-emitting layer, a transparent substrate, and a transparent electrode disposed between the organic light-emitting layer and the transparent substrate; and which treats the surface of the transparent substrate on the opposite side from the transparent electrode as a light-extraction surface. The transparent substrate has birefringence, and has a refraction index of a P polarized light that is less than a refraction index of an S polarized light. A polarized light wherein an oscillation direction of an electric field is parallel to a laminated surface of the light-emitting layer is designated S polarized light, and a polarized light that includes a vector of the direction of the progression of the light and in which the oscillation direction of the electric field is included in a plane perpendicular to the laminated surface is designated P polarized light.

    摘要: Provided are an optical device, optically assisted magnetic recording head and optically assisted magnetic recording apparatus that effectively emit the introduced light, from the apex portion of a waveguide. The optical device includes: an optical element having a substantially parabolic outline which contains a side surface and the apex portion with a light-emitting surface; a light guiding unit for forming a light spot on the core layer; and a light introducing section provided on the core layer at the position at which the light spot is formed. The light introduced into the core layer travels substantially parallel to the axis of the parabola, and is reflected by the side surface so as to be converged at the focal point of the parabola and is then emitted from the apex portion. The position of the point where the light intensity is greatest in the light spot is deviated from the axis.

    摘要: Provided is a magnetic recording device which can perform high density magnetic recording by simple constitution. The magnetic recording device is provided with a disk driving device for rotating a magnetic disk; a head having a heating section for heating a circular track of the magnetic disk and a recording element for applying a magnetic field modulated by an electric signal to the magnetic disk; and a head drive device for circularly moving the head in the radius direction of the magnetic disk by rotating about a driving shaft. The recording element has a magnetism applying section that traverses any track heated by the heating section in the radius direction of the magnetic disk.

    摘要: An optical head includes: a slider which moves relative to a recording medium while the slider is floating above the recording medium; an optical waveguide which is provided on a side surface of an end portion of the slider and which has the focusing function of forming a light spot on the recording medium; and a light guide optical system that guides a light pencil to the optical waveguide. A light pencil coupling portion which receives the light pencil from the light guide optical system is provided in a surface parallel to a direction in which the light pencil is guided by the optical waveguide; and a reflective surface which deflects the light pencil to the light pencil coupling portion is provided in the light guide optical system. The light pencil coupling portion has the function of correcting aberration resulting from oblique incidence of the light pencil obliquely incident from the light guide optical system. A medium member which has a refractive index of more than one is provided between the reflective surface and the light pencil coupling portion.
