A new series of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-5H-(1)benzopyrano(3,4c)pyridines and 5H-(1)benzopyrano-(3,4-c)piperidines, having C.N.S. and cardiovascular activity, and 5-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro5H-(1)benzopyrano(3,4-c)pyridines used as intermediates in the preparation thereof.

Novel 7-alkyl-(and 7-cycloalkyl-loweralkyl)9-hydroxy-4,4-dilower-alkyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro -(1)benzopyrano (3,4-c)pyrroles; 7alkyl-(and 7-cycloalkyl-lower-alkyl)9-hydroxy-4,4-di-lower alkyl1,2,3,4,3a,9b-hexahydro(1)benzopyrano(3,4-c)pyrroles, and certain ester and ether derivatives thereof. These compounds exhibit CNS activity, and are useful as sedatives or tranquilizers.
