    摘要: A method for use in a computer system provides a dynamic, “self tuning” soft-error-rate-discrimination (SERD) method and apparatus. Specially designed SRAMs or other circuits are “tuned” in a manner that gives them extreme susceptibility to cosmic neutron events (soft errors), higher than that of the “regular” SRAM components, memory modules or other components in the computer system. One such specially designed SRAM is deployed per server. An interface algorithm continuously sends read/write traffic to the special SRAM to infer the soft error rate (SER), which is directly proportional to cosmic neutron flux. The inferred cosmic neutron flux rate is employed in a Poisson SPRT algorithmic approach that dynamically compensates the soft error discrimination sensitivity in accordance with the instantaneous neutron flux for all of the regular SRAM components in the server.

    摘要: Some embodiments of the present invention provide a system that attenuates noise from a fan exhaust of a computer system. During operation, the system monitors the noise from the fan exhaust and calculates a frequency spectrum of the noise from the monitored noise. Next, the system generates an antiphase spectrum from the frequency spectrum and generates a flow of air which exhibits a property of the antiphase spectrum. Finally, the system directs the flow of air into the fan exhaust so that the noise is attenuated by a reduction of turbulence in the fan exhaust by the flow of air.

    摘要: A method and an apparatus for determining cooling fan speeds that should be avoided to prevent vibational resonance with system enclosures, given ambient conditions, and/or current geographic altitude. An exemplary method to determine one or more ranges of fan speed for one or more cooling fans in a chassis with one or more systems to avoid vibrational resonance in the chassis caused by the one or more cooling fans is provided. The method includes determining a range of operable fan speed for the one or more cooling fans that meets the cooling goal of the one or more systems in the chassis, wherein the one or more cooling fans are used to cool the chassis, and the one or more systems. The method also includes scanning fan speed for the one or more cooling fans over the determined range of operable fan speed, and collecting and analyzing read or write rates on a hard disk drive in the one or more systems over the determined range of operable fan speed. The method further includes determining one or more ranges of usable fan speed that avoid vibrational resonance in the chassis caused by the one or more cooling fans, based on the collected and analyzed read or write rates.

    摘要: The disclosed embodiments provide a system that prevents oscillatory load behavior for a multi-node distributed system. During operation, the system uses a load-balancing policy to distribute requests to nodes of the distributed system. The system determines operational characteristics for the nodes as they process a set of requests, and then uses these operational characteristics to compute machine queuing models that describe the machine state of each node. The system then uses this machine state for the nodes to determine whether the load-balancing policy and the distributed system are susceptible to oscillatory load behavior.
