A method is provided for joining a flexible container to a threaded closure. According to the method, a flexible container is inflated with pressurized gas before applying torque to the container. A base of the flexible container is engaged in a container receptacle of a capping apparatus, then the capping apparatus is operated to cause a neck of the flexible container to engage a threaded opening in the closure. The bottle is then inflated and the capping apparatus is operated to thread the neck of the flexible container into the opening in the closure by causing relative rotation between the flexible container and the closure. The pressurized gas stiffens the flexible container and prevents it from buckling or twisting under torque loads applied to screw the container into the closure.

A rotary blow molding machine includes a plurality of mold stations on a rotary carousel. Each mold station includes a pair of mold sections movable toward and away from one another to close or open the mold sections. When closed, the mold sections define a mold blowing cavity and a mold mouth communicating with the blowing cavity and opening external of the closed mold sections. A blowing/neck finishing mechanism preferably is mounted on one of the mold sections for movement between a retracted position where the blow pin is offset from the mold mouth so as not to hinder capturing of the parison in the mold station and a blowing position where the blow pin is inserted in the mold mouth. A pivotal linkage moves the blow pin in an arcuate path toward the mold mouth to insert the blow pin therein to blow a parison received in the blowing cavity and away from the mouth to extract the blow pin from the mouth after parison blowing. The pivotal linkage minimizes arcuate travel of the blow pin as it approaches and enters the mold mouth. The blow pin and mold mouth include cooperating cutting components to pinch and shear the end of the parison received in the mouth when the blow pin is inserted therein.

A rotary take-out apparatus for removing blow-molded articles from rotary blow-molding machine molds. The apparatus includes a rotary take-out carrousel and a take-out carrousel drive configured to rotate the take-out carrousel. Pick-up stations on the take-out carrousel rotate along a circular pick-up station path. Each station includes a pick-up head array comprising at least one pick-up head. Fluid cylinders are supported on the take-out carrousel and are each operatively connected to one of the pick-up head arrays. Each cylinder is configured to move a pick-up head array between extended and retracted positions when differential fluid pressure is directed to respective first and second chambers in the cylinder. Each pick-up head is configured to releasably grasp a blow-molded article. Cylinder valves are supported on the take-out carrousel and are connected between each cylinder and a source of differential fluid pressure. Each cylinder valve alternately diverts differential fluid pressure to the first and second chambers of a cylinder. A controller coordinates the motions of the pick-up heads, take-out carrousel, and mold carrousel to grasp and remove blow-molded articles from the molds and to release them at a point spaced from the mold carrousel.

A method and an apparatus are provided for blow-molding hollow articles. The blow-molding apparatus includes a carrousel mounted to rotate within a support frame. The carrousel carries four molds around a circular mold path. Two blow-molding work stations are disposed next to the mold path in fixed positions relative to the frame. The carrousel is indexed to cause each mold to pause by each work station one time during each carrousel revolution. The molds pause by each work station to allow blow-molding operations to be performed in conjunction with each mold at each work station. At one blow-molding work station, located at the 12:00 position of the mold path, an extruder injects parison into each mold. At the other work station, located in the 9:00 position of the mold path, a take-out mechanism extracts blow molded articles from the molds. The carrousel is additionally indexed, i.e., "double-indexed", to cause each mold to pause in the 10:30 position of the mold path where an in-mold labeling mechanism inserts a label into each mold.

The take-out mechanism includes an oscillator arm that is rotated ninety degrees at a time between a horizontal article engagement position and a vertical article release position. A take-out member extends from the oscillator arm and includes expandable pins that extend into the molds to grip the blow-molded articles at their necks.

Apparatus for applying labels in the molds of a plastic blow molding machine of the type wherein a plurality of sets of molds are mounted on a wheel rotatable about a horizontal axis. Mold sections are moved toward and away from one another to enclose a parison, and the parison is then blown to the confines of the cavity between the mold sections. The apparatus removes labels successively from one or more magazines, and deposits labels on an endless conveyor that transports the labels to a position adjacent an open mold. The apparatus laterally transfers the labels successively from the conveyor to a position within the mold section, such that when a mold closes about a plastic parison and the parison is blown, the labels become adhered to the blown plastic article. The label magazines are mounted in horizontal orientation, and the label pickup mechanisms are moved by a positive-action slider crank in a straight line for picking up and removing a label from the magazine, and in a straight line for delivering the label to the conveyor while the conveyor is stationary. The label placement apparatus is positively driven to remove the label from the conveyor while it is stationary and deliver it to the mold cavity.

Apparatus for transferring articles, such as containers, along a processing path includes a reciprocating slide with opposing, rotating feed screws disposed thereon for engaging the containers wherein reciprocation of the slide and rotation of the feed screws are coordinated in direction, time and speed to feed the containers along the processing path with a predetermined dwell of the containers at one or more work stations while the containers remain engaged between the rotating feed screws.

A flash removing apparatus is provided which has a pair of blades driven by an actuator through a linkage assembly, simultaneously and in opposite directions, between a bottle receiving position and a closed position to aid in removing flash from a plastic product disposed on the blades. Preferably, the blades can also be moved to a fully open position to permit a bottle to pass between the blades and increase manufacturing flexibility and efficiency of the apparatus. The linkage assembly has a center link rotatable about a fixed pivot and at least one link arm connected to the center link and operably connected to the actuator to unfold and fold the linkage assembly in response to movement of the actuator between its advanced and retracted positions. The folding and unfolding of the linkage assembly moves the blades between their open and closed positions in cycles to remove flash from consecutive plastic products.

A method and an apparatus are provided for inserting labels into blow-molded hollow articles. The blow-molding apparatus includes a carrousel mounted to rotate within a support frame. The carrousel carries four multi-cavity molds around a circular mold path. Two blow-molding workstations are disposed next to the mold path in fixed positions relative to the frame. The carrousel is indexed to cause each mold to pause by each workstation, and at a label-insertion station, one time during each carrousel revolution. An in-mold labeler inserts a label into each mold at the label-insertion station. The in-mold labeler includes four picker heads supported on a carriage that shuttles the heads between label dispensing magazines and the mold station path. Each magazine includes a label stack receptacle in which labels rest edgewise, by gravitational force on a pair of label guide surfaces. Each picker head releasably grasps labels from a label magazine and deposits the labels into open mold cavities at the label-insertion station. Each magazine is translationally and rotationally adjustable to control label orientation in the mold cavities.

A head trimmer machine for cutting off excess material from a cylindrical portion of a blow molded bottle includes a fixture, a spindle rotatably mounted in the fixture, a cutting head attached to the spindle for rotation therewith, a cutter mounted to the cutting head, and a vacuum source for collecting the trimmed material by suction. The cutting head has a central passage so that it can fit down over the head of the blow molded bottle. The cutter is supported in the cutting head for movement between retracted and extended positions. In the extended position, the cutter extends into the central passage of the cutting head to cut the head or other excess material from the neck of the bottle as the cutting head turns. The spindle includes a central passage aligned with the central passage of the cutting head and the excess material is removed by being drawn through these passages by a gaseous flow created by the vacuum source. Movement of the cutter can be pneumatically controlled by a pair of air pistons located on the cutting head, with the air pistons receiving pneumatic control signals from an outside source via rotational pneumatic couplings between the fixture and spindle.
