A posterior arch prosthesis according to the present invention includes a main body, two transverse protuberances extending transversely from either side of the main body, articulating surfaces formed on each of the transverse protuberances, and a posterior protuberance extending posteriorly from the main body. The posterior protuberance is attached to a first vertebra from which the natural posterior arch has been removed such that the articulating surfaces are arranged in articulating contact with surfaces on an adjacent, second vertebra. The posterior protuberance includes an attachment to which native structure may be reattached upon attachment of the prosthesis to the first vertebra.

A tissue extender includes a ring defining a proximal end opening to engage a head of a subcutaneous screw, a first extender portion coupled to the ring at a proximal end of the first extender portion, and a second extender portion coupled to the ring at a proximal end of the second extender portion. The first extender portion includes a first coupling portion disposed at a distal end of the first extender portion, and the second extender portion includes a second coupling portion at a distal end of the second extender portion. The first and second extender portions define two side openings disposed on opposite sides of the tissue extender. The distal ends of the first and second extender portions together define a distal end opening. The first coupling portion engages the second coupling portion when the tissue extender is in an extended state. The distal end opening is larger in the extended state than in an unextended state.

A device for attaching an elongate support member to the spinal column includes a head portion and a fastening member. The head portion may have a U-shaped portion defining a transverse passage therethrough. The passage may be sized to receive a portion of the elongate support member. The head portion may have an opening between a pair of spaced apart arm portions, the arm portions having end surfaces and having inwardly facing threads. The device also may include a fastening member comprising a body portion having threads sized to interface with inwardly facing threads on the head portion, the body portion defining a longitudinal axis. The fastening member also may include a flange portion adjacent the body portion. The flange portion may extend outwardly about the longitudinal axis to define a circular flange perimeter. The flange portion may include a transversely extending protruding portion and an angled protruding portion.

A spinal implant system including components designed to be affixed to the spinal column. The system includes spinal rods, attachment devices, and interpositional sleeves for securing the attachment devices to the rods. The attachment devices may be various types of spinal hooks, screws, couplers, rod connectors, clamps, or other such devices.

A spinal rod having first and second end members. The end members may be flexible or rigid. An expandable intermediate section is positioned between the first and second end members. The intermediate section may be axially expandable upon the introduction of a substance into a port that may be located in either of the first and second end members or the intermediate section. The intermediate section may be expandable between a first size, where the first and second end members are spaced a first distance apart, and a second enlarged size, where the first and second end members are spaced a second greater distance apart.

A method of securing vertebrae includes inserting a first pedicle screw into a first pedicle of a first vertebra. The first pedicle screw includes a first channel running perpendicular to a first central axis of the first pedicle screw. The first pedicle screw has a first engagement structure. The method further includes inserting a second pedicle screw into a second pedicle of a second vertebra. The second pedicle screw includes a second channel running perpendicular to a second central axis of the second pedicle screw. The second pedicle screw has a second engagement structure. The method also includes inserting a guidewire through the first and second channels, threading a tether attached to an end of the guidewire through the first and second channels, securing the tether to the first pedicle screw, applying tension to the tether, and securing the tether to the second pedicle screw.

The transport carrier of this invention is configured for use with an external fixator having a hexagonal rod. The carrier includes a threaded sleeve which accommodates the hexagonal rod of the fixator. A compressible ball collet and retaining nut are carried by the sleeve and serve to lock the sleeve into position on the rod in a known manner. A clamp is carried by the sleeve and rotationally fixed relative to the rod by a key and key way, yet may shift along the sleeve. The clamp is configured to connect to one or more bone pins using a ball collet and retaining nut to fix the clamp to the pin. The bone pins connect to a bone fragment such that as the clamp shifts along the sleeve, the bone fragment is transported between two portions of a bone. An internally threaded sleeve is carried by the externally threaded sleeve and engages the clamp. Upon rotation of the internally threaded sleeve, the clamp and externally threaded sleeve move longitudinally along the sleeve.
